        "content": "<p>Google has been fined US$1 billion (around Rp 17 trillion) by the\nEuropean Commission. The penalty was imposed after Google was found to\nhave violated the European Union\u2019s anti-monopoly rules.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission ruled that Google had given preferential\ntreatment to its own services over third-party providers. This is the\nfirst sanction the technology giant has received since the Digital\nMarkets Act (DMA) came into force.<\/p>\n<p>The DMA is an EU regulation designed to oversee the business\npractices of large technology companies and foster healthier competition\nin the digital market.<\/p>\n<p>Two Main Violations<\/p>\n<p>According to the European Commission\u2019s findings, Google breached the\nDMA in two principal ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><p>Search results: Google displayed its own services, such as\nshopping, hotel bookings, and travel tickets, in far more prominent\npositions than similar third-party services.<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>Anti-steering rules: The company prevented app developers\ndistributing products through Google Play from informing users about\npotentially cheaper offers elsewhere, and from directing them to\nalternative app stores or external websites.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cSpecifically, Google prevented app developers from communicating\nfreely, promoting offers, and entering into contracts with users through\nany channel of their choosing, including third-party app stores,\u201d the\nEuropean Commission said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Kent Walker, President of Global Affairs at Google and Alphabet,\nargued that the enforcement of these rules would instead damage the\nquality of services enjoyed by Europeans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are being forced to remove search features that Europeans value,\nsuch as live prices and availability for flights, hotels, and\nrestaurants, and to weaken security protections on Google Play,\u201d Walker\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Google said it is studying the decision and considering an\nappeal.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the fine, the European Commission has ordered Google\nto treat third-party services fairly and without discrimination in\nsearch results, to allow app developers to promote offers, and to enter\ninto contracts with users both inside and outside the Google Play\nStore.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission noted that Google has already submitted and begun\ntesting changes to its search results display, and has started revising\nthe rules in its app store. The company has been given 60 days to fully\ncomply. If it fails to do so, additional fines could reach 5% of\nAlphabet\u2019s total global revenue each year.<\/p>\n<p>Market Reaction<\/p>\n<p>The DMA, which came into force in 2024, designated Alphabet, Apple,\nMeta, and several other dominant internet companies as digital market\n\u201cgatekeepers\u201d, subjecting them to additional obligations to maintain\nfair competition.<\/p>",
