Good level-headed advice<\/p>\n
Every time our country was hit by crisis in the past, our late
\n(vice president) Adam Malik had an excellent piece of advice for
\nIndonesians: \"Our hearts may be boiling over, but our heads must
\nremain cool\". This piece of advice should resonate in our minds
\nevery time we read or watch foreign media reports about our
\ncurrent crisis.<\/p>\n
Take, for example, a widening assumption that the
\nInternational Monetary Fund (IMF) is dictating terms to
\nIndonesia, or that it is against the implementation of a currency
\nboard system. In reality, the agreement reached between Indonesia
\nand the IMF merely contains points that have been suggested by
\nIndonesia's own economic experts for a long time, with IMF
\nexperts functioning more as providers of second opinions. The IMF
\nalso has never said it was against a currency board. From the
\nvery beginning, it has held the opinion that the Indonesian
\neconomy could be rescued by other, less risky means.<\/p>\n
We hope that the conclusion of the People's Consultative
\nAssembly's General Session and the formation of a new cabinet
\nwill soon enable a smooth communication between the government
\nand multilateral institutions such as the IMF and donor
\ncountries. Any negative impacts created by speculation could thus
\nbe minimized.<\/p>\n
