Golkar...why not just dissolve!<\/p>\n

Early this year the General Chairman of the Functional Group
\n(Golkar), Akbar Tandjung, finally apologized to the community for
\nall Golkar's past mistakes. I hoped this sincere apology would
\nregain public sympathy for Golkar.<\/p>\n
However, reform movement activist Yenny Rosa Damayanti, said
\nthat Golkar's apology was too late, adding that the political
\norganization failed to make any mention at all of the myriad
\nforms of violence committed during the New Order.<\/p>\n
I would like to suggest Akbar Tandjung cease issuing
\nstatements and making promises that will never be realized and
\ninstead dissolve Golkar.<\/p>\n
The rationale for my suggestion is as follows:<\/p>\n
* Golkar leaders have never kept their word. Remember in the last
\ngeneral election how the prominent Golkar campaigners
\nbombastically promised to increase the standard of living for all
\npeople. At the end of the day, all the benefits were enjoyed by
\nthe campaigners themselves and their associates only, leaving the
\npeople's fate the same as ever, or even poorer.<\/p>\n
* Golkar veterans then adopted a very disappointing Reform
\nCabinet, one that selected none other than those arrogant old
\ntimers who belonged to the New Order regime. Look at the way
\nHarmoko acted when he was the general chairman of Golkar and
\nacted concurrently as minister of information. Recall also the
\narrogance that was shown by the Head of the Supreme Advisory
\nCouncil, AA Baramuli. It was disgusting. During these ten months
\nof Reform Cabinet administration, the government has failed to
\nimprove the people's standard of living. Conditions have in fact
\nworsened with the prevailing climate of violence. Atrocities have
\noccurred in a number of locales, the latest and most appalling
\none taking place in Maluku province.<\/p>\n
The cabinet, House of Representatives (DPR) and the People's
\nConsultative Assembly (MPR) should also be dissolved, because
\nmost of the members of the latter two institutions are only
\nmouthpieces for the New Order. To fill the vacuum in the
\nadministration I propose that the reform heroes (the best leaders
\nfrom our university senates), under the cooperation and
\nleadership of their rectors be entrusted to establish a
\nprovisional MPR. Their primary task should be the completion of
\nall the unfinished laws, including the crucial political and
\nelection laws. Emergency measures need to be taken to rescue our
\ncountry from crumbling and disintegrating. The situation could
\nlead to social revolution, as feared by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU)
\norganization chairman Abdurrahman Wahid and by us all. We need
\nscrupulously clean, honest and concerned figures to build our
\nsocial, economic and political as well as legal settings anew.<\/p>\n
