Golkar supporters want better rice<\/p>\n
UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi (JP): Golkar supporters are
\nbesieging their leaders with demands, even local teachers want
\nbetter rice in their monthly rations.<\/p>\n
Other supporters want free school tuition, cheaper gasoline
\nand typewriters for local administration offices in return for
\nvotes.<\/p>\n
In Gowa regency, supporters asked campaigners Radinal Moochtar
\nand Paturungi Parawansa yesterday what Golkar was doing to
\nimprove the welfare of civil servants and teachers -- all
\nmandatory Golkar supporters.<\/p>\n
\"Dear Golkar campaigners, we don't deny that we are given
\nmonthly rice rations (by the government). The problem is, we have
\nto sign receipts stating that we received good quality rice when
\nwhat we really got was poor quality rice,\" said one teacher among
\nthe thousands of people at the Golkar rally.<\/p>\n
There was a thunderous applause after the teacher's remark,
\nprompting a hasty response from the speakers.<\/p>\n
\"It's a small problem,\" Paturungi said. \"What's important is
\nthat Golkar will continuously strive to improve the welfare of
\nteachers and civil servants.\"<\/p>\n
Radinal, also Minister of Public Works, promised that Golkar
\nwould keep fighting for its supporters' welfare. \"Golkar will
\nchannel people's aspirations, and fight for them. But
\n(development) programs that have been set up won't run well
\nunless the community helps,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Another supporter asked Golkar to provide clean water for
\nschools in Gowa regency.<\/p>\n
\"Insya Allah (God willing), I will soon provide the schools
\nwith such a facility,\" said Radinal, who also promised to look
\ninto a request for cheap housing for teachers.<\/p>\n
\"We will consider the request, and cooperate with the South
\nSulawesi administration and other relevant agencies,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Paturungi promised that teachers would soon be sent to study
\nabroad.<\/p>\n
\"You just wait and see. If you are achievers and can get even
\nbetter, (we'll) send you abroad,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Across the island, in the East Kalimantan capital of
\nBalikpapan, campaigner I.B. Sudjana captivated a Golkar rally by
\nsinging Bujangan, a popular song about the joys of being single.<\/p>\n
Sudjana, also Minister of Mines and Energy, grooved in the
\nheat with about 10,000 supporters and several Golkar singers and
\ncelebrities.<\/p>\n
Sudjana told the rally that Golkar would always fight for the
\npoor, Antara reported. He said that fishermen and motorcycle
\ntaxis (ojeg) drivers would be among those to receive assistance.<\/p>\n
Sudjana then took off his wristwatch, engraved with Golkar's
\nbanyan tree symbol, and gave it to an ojeg driver.<\/p>\n
In Banjarmasin regency, South Kalimantan, convoys of Golkar
\nsupporters caused big traffic jams.<\/p>\n
Antara reported that most supporters joined the motorcades
\nrather than listen to campaign speeches at rallies in several
\nvillages.<\/p>\n
In Central Kalimantan, Golkar's rally in Kapuas regency was
\nled by Sarwono Kusumaatmadja, also State Minister of Environment.
\nThe National Development Planning Board's deputy chairman,
\nRahardi Ramelan, addressed a rally in Kotawaringin regency.<\/p>\n
In Palu, Central Sulawesi, Golkar chairman Harmoko went all
\nout to woo first-time voters.<\/p>\n
Addressing 12,000 supporters at Palu City Hall, Minister of
\nInformation Harmoko gave a Golkar wristwatch and handkerchief to
\na female first-time voter. He gave his gold-plated wristwatch and
