        "content": "<p>Golkar supporters top traffic violations<\/p>\n<p>UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi (JP): The police have ticketed<br>\n317 election rally revelers for traffic violations, most of them<br>\nfrom the ruling political group Golkar.<\/p>\n<p>Chief of Ujungpandang city police Col. Mochammad Darus said<br>\nyesterday that 197 Golkar supporters would go to court for<br>\nvarious traffic law offenses they committed on their way back<br>\nfrom a rally.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) and the<br>\nUnited Development Party (PPP), who rallied on Tuesday and<br>\nWednesday respectively, shared second place with 60 tickets.<\/p>\n<p>Darus said that most of the Golkar supporters, as well as<br>\ntheir PDI and PPP counterparts, were found guilty for not wearing<br>\nhelmets and packing motorcycles with more than two passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the booking, the police detained more than 100<br>\nmotorcycles and cars.<\/p>\n<p>Darus said that the vehicles would be kept at police<br>\nheadquarters for between one and two months. \"The length of stay<br>\nwill depend on the motorist's violation,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Police in the South Sulawesi capital imposed stricter policies<br>\nearlier this week after learning that many election rally<br>\nrevelers initiated street rallies and thus broke the law.<\/p>\n<p>Provincial leadership of the three political contestants<br>\napproved the police move.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the rally attendants looked unprepared for the strict<br>\nmeasures imposed by the police. They just followed when police<br>\nsurrounded them and brought them in groups to police<br>\nheadquarters.<\/p>\n<p>In yesterday's rally at Karebosi field, Minister of Finance<br>\nMar'ie Muhammad, in his capacity as a Golkar senior functionary,<br>\ntold 5,000 people joining the gathering that they carried the<br>\nmission to maintain the party's grip on the province.<\/p>\n<p>\"Don't talk and make too many comments. Let's promise to win<br>\nthe general election for Golkar,\" Mar'ie said in his brief<br>\nspeech.<\/p>\n<p>Hasan Walinono, a senior official at the Ministry of Education<br>\nand Culture, Linda Gumelar, House legislator and wife of Sulawesi<br>\nmilitary commander Maj. Gen. Agum Gumelar, as well as Jusuf<br>\nKalla, renowned businessperson raised in the province, were other<br>\ncampaigners at the rally.<\/p>\n<p>As soon as Mar'ie completed his speech, a group of Golkar<br>\nsupporters tried to flee for a street rally. Police foiled their<br>\nattempt, however.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier that day, Governor HZB Palaguna in his capacity as<br>\nchairman of the Indonesian Election Committee's South Sulawesi<br>\noffice, accompanied by Agum, observed an indoor rally at<br>\nKemanunggalan ABRI-Rakyat hall. No less than 1,500 people were<br>\npresent.<\/p>\n<p>In another Golkar rally in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan,<br>\nthe party's patron Sarwono Kusumaatmadja claimed that Golkar<br>\nswept the previous five general elections due to its key role in<br>\nthe national development program.<\/p>\n<p>\"The growing public support for Golkar suggests (support for)<br>\nits successful development program,\" he was quoted by Antara as<br>\nsaying.<\/p>\n<p>Sarwono, the State Minister of Environment, spoke only for<br>\nfive minutes before leaving for Buntok, South Barito regency, for<br>\nan indoor rally.
