Golkar plans to establish school to improve cadres<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Chairman of the dominant Golkar, Harmoko, said
\nover the weekend that Golkar would establish a school designed to
\nimprove the quality of its political cadres.<\/p>\n
\"The school is meant to increase our political cadres'
\nqualities in anticipating the future challenges of globalization
\nand trade liberalization,\" Harmoko said while addressing a
\nseminar on Golkar's concept for the 1998\/2003 State Policy
\nGuidelines in Medan, North Sumatra, on Friday evening.<\/p>\n
The school, to open in July, will run courses on practical
\npolitical knowledge and skills.<\/p>\n
\"Rather than just mastering political matters, Golkar cadres
\nshould also master subjects on the economy, social affairs and
\nhuman relations,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Commenting on Harmoko's concept, political observer Arbi Sanit
\nsaid such a school would be beneficial in educating cadres of
\npolitical organizations so that they would be ready to practice
\nreal politics.<\/p>\n
\"Equipping cadres with political skills and other practical
\nknowledge is important as such skills cannot be found in formal
\nuniversity classes,\" Arbi told The Jakarta Post Saturday.<\/p>\n
He cited two seasoned politicians, A.A. Baramuli and Umar
\nTosin, who were products of a similar political school organized
\nby the now-defunct Moslem political party Masyumi in the 1950s.<\/p>\n
Baramuli is now a Golkar legislator, while the late Umar Tosin
\nwas an activist of the new Masyumi organization.<\/p>\n
Arbi told the United Development Party (PPP) and the
\nIndonesian Democratic Party (PDI) to follow Golkar's lead, saying
\nit was better late than never to prepare cadres in such a
\nsystematic manner.<\/p>\n
\"The PPP and the PDI should not be ashamed of following
\nGolkar's move,\" he said.<\/p>\n
A member of Golkar's Research and Development Center, Amir
\nSantoso, said that whether such a school could succeed would
\ndepend mainly on its programs.<\/p>\n
\"The school should prioritize lessons on nationalism. As a
\nnation, we are now experiencing the increasing trend of
\ncompartmentalizing between groups in society,\" he told the Post.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia is a huge and heterogeneous nation. All we need is
\ncommon a perception in viewing state affairs and policies,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Commenting on Harmoko's plan, Amir said the newly appointed
\nstate minister of special assignments might have observed the
\nimportance of equipping Golkar's legislators with knowledge on
\ncrucial subjects, including politics and international relations.<\/p>\n
\"Many Golkar legislators come from regions and provinces far
\nfrom Jakarta. They need such knowledge,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Golkar had a landslide victory in the 1997 general election
\nwith 74.3 percent of the vote. PPP followed with a distant 22
