Golkar must introspect itself<\/p>\n

The Golkar Party will encounter problems in the future. When
\nthe party held a grand meeting at the Senayan Main Stadium in
\nJakarta, it was a public secret that it gave money and lunch to
\neverybody attending the meeting.<\/p>\n
When Akbar Tandjung made his speech, the sky suddenly became
\ncloudy, followed by resounding thunder. Strangely, it was a very
\nbright day shortly before. This must have been a bad omen for the
\nGolkar Party. Then, we heard a report of an incident in the
\nCentral Java town of Purbalingga, followed by the collapse of the
\nstage at Tambak Sari Stadium in Surabaya. Obviously, God has
\ngiven His warning. Reap what you sow, so the saying goes. All
\nthese unfortunate happenings must have stemmed from unfair
\npractices during the New Order era, in which Golkar had a big
\nshare.<\/p>\n
On the Purbalingga incident, this may not have been
\nperpetrated by PDI Perjuangan members because the jackets and
\nother attributes of this party are available anywhere. We must
\nremember that Megawati Soekarnoputri always asks all PDI
\nPerjuangan members to love peace, abide by the law and never
\nresort to rioting.<\/p>\n
In fact, what has happened recently to the Golkar Party is
\ninsignificant compare to the bloody incident on July 27, 1996, in
\nwhich many were killed and major material loss was incurred. The
\nGolkar Party should introspect itself because other parties never
\nexperienced something like this when they celebrate their
\nanniversary or organize meetings. In Surabaya, for example, three
\nparties, PDI Perjuangan, PAN and PPP, held their parades in a
\nfriendly and peaceful manner. Only the Golkar Party and former-
\ngovernment's backed PDI under Budi Hardjono usually have trouble
\nwhen organizing events involving the masses.<\/p>\n
Golkar should remember what it has done in the past:
\ninstructing then Central Java governor (Suwardi) to paint public
\nplaces yellow and the conviction shown by Harmoko when nominating
\nSoeharto as Indonesia's president in the previous election.<\/p>\n
