The Golkar Party has expressed no objections to the Corruption Eradication Commission's (KPK) proposal to limit the tenure of political party leaders to a maximum of two terms, noting that its leadership has historically rotated every period without anyone serving two full terms. Secretary General Sarmuji emphasised the importance of high-quality internal democracy to prevent over-reliance on a single figure and ensure diverse ideas reflecting societal views. The KPK's recommendation, based on academic findings, aims to improve party regeneration, reduce political costs, and close loopholes for corruption in the political sector.

Jakarta, VIVA – The Golkar Party has affirmed that it has no issues
with the proposal from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK)
regarding the limitation of the general chairman’s tenure in political
parties to a maximum of two terms.

This stance was expressed by the Secretary General of the Golkar
Party, Sarmuji, in response to the KPK’s proposal.

“We have no problem if there is a limit of two terms (for the
position of general chairman),” he said at the Golkar DPP headquarters
in Jakarta on Thursday, 23 April 2026.

Sarmuji explained that his statement was not without reason, as the
chairman of the Golkar Party has never served up to two terms.

“Golkar’s leadership changes every period. Even to this day, there
has not been a single person who has managed to serve two full terms in
the Golkar Party. So if it is limited to two terms, that is actually an
issue that does not affect Golkar,” he revealed.

He also assessed that the most important thing at present is how the
internal democracy in a party is of quality.

Because, if the internal democracy is of quality, a party will not
depend solely on one particular figure.

“We will not depend on one figure alone, but there are many ideas
there that can be absorbed, and those ideas also reflect the thoughts
that are developing in society,” he stressed.

Previously, the KPK proposed that the tenure of the general chairman
(Ketum) of political parties be limited to a maximum of two terms. This
is intended to prevent corruption in the political sector.

The proposal is included in the study on political party governance
prepared by the KPK’s Directorate of Monitoring. The anti-corruption
agency stated that the recommendation is based on findings and academic
arguments related to improving the political system and efforts to close
corruption loopholes.

KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo said that limiting the leadership
tenure in parties is one of the important points arising from the
results of that study.

“One of the findings is in point eight, regarding the limitation of
terms for a political party chairman, which of course also has an
academic basis,” Budi said at the KPK’s Red and White Building in
Jakarta on Thursday, 23 April 2026.

According to him, the study found that regeneration within the party
structure has not been running optimally. That condition, he said,
affects the high cost of politics.
",
