        "content": "<p>Golkar aims to win over women to retain majority<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): After months of extensive campaigning for the<br>\nsupport of villagers and the poor, including beggars and shoe<br>\npolishers, Golkar is now targeting women.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the ruling political grouping Harmoko said<br>\nyesterday that Golkar intends to win over women, who make up 52<br>\npercent of the total population of 190 million, because they<br>\nrepresent a formidable source of support.<\/p>\n<p>\"Their potential support must not be ignored,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>\"The effort to obtain the votes of the great number of women<br>\nis the responsibility of the women leaders in the grouping,\" he<br>\ntold the opening of a three-day training session for 264 Golkar<br>\nfemale cadres.<\/p>\n<p>Following the completion of the training, he expects the<br>\nparticipants, through various programs, to convince other women<br>\nto support Golkar.<\/p>\n<p>\"As prospective voters for the 1997 general elections, those<br>\nwomen should be continuously educated, especially by mothers, who<br>\nare the central figures of the family,\" he was quoted by Antara<br>\nas saying.<\/p>\n<p>He did not say whether Golkar will launch special programs to<br>\nattract women voters. Rather it's a pledge to compete to<br>\nobtain the majority of votes by means of well-established<br>\nprograms,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the training participants are members of professional<br>\norganizations.<\/p>\n<p>Golkar has won each of the last five general elections.
