Golkar accused of cheating<\/p>\n
KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: The head of Nambo subdistrict in
\nPoasia has attempted to pass off an unspecified amount of rice
\naid from the Ministry of Social Services as Golkar-sponsored
\nrelief, an independent poll watchdog announced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Patrik Passasung of the Independent Election Monitoring
\nCommittee (KIPP) told Antara here the official, who was not
\nnamed, barred "non-Golkar" villagers from obtaining the rice.<\/p>\n
"This rice aid is from Golkar, so villagers who are not
\nmembers of Golkar are not entitled to get it," the subdistrict
\nhead was quoted by Patrik as telling the villagers, who later
\nreported the incident to the regional KIPP.<\/p>\n
KIPP found a similar practice in Nembung village in Lambuya
\ndistrict of Kendari regency.<\/p>\n
A village head claimed as much as 3.5 tons of rice relief for
\nthe poor was a gift from Golkar.<\/p>\n
Patrik said the practices were against the new political laws
\nwhich required civil servants to be neutral -- a move taken after
\n32 years of manipulation of the bureaucracy to serve the ruling
\nGolkar.<\/p>\n
"I don't know whether the village head or the subdistrict head
\nwere ordered by their superiors. It's just saddening if they
\nwere," he said.<\/p>\n
Patrik said the committee also found that voter registration
\nofficers collected Rp 5,500 (65 U.S. cents) from registrants in
\nLupia subdistrict, Kabawo district, Muna regency. (aan)<\/p>",
