Golf course causes sedimentation<\/p>\n
The National Aeronautics and Space Research Institute has
\ndetermined that the construction of the Pantai Indah Kapuk golf
\ncourse and real estate complexes in North Jakarta is accelerating
\nsedimentation along the coast.<\/p>\n
The sedimentation is caused mainly by the reckless felling of
\nmangrove trees by the developers of the projects, Bidawi Hasyim,
\nthe institute's marine researcher, was quoted by the Antara news
\nagency as saying.<\/p>\n
The institute's satellite data show that the golf course and
\nhousing estates now cover 308.34 hectares, up from only 225.45
\nhectares in 1992.<\/p>\n
The high sedimentation level makes the seashore vulnerable
\nbecause the absence of mangrove plants, which used to function as
\nfilters for solid materials and liquid wastes, will speed up the
