Golden Key virtually a one-man show: Prosecution<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Eddy Tansil ran Golden Key Group virtually all
\nby himself, with many of his hand-picked directors simply front
\nmen with backgrounds ranging from a feeble retired army general
\nto an office cleaner.<\/p>\n
This was revealed on Tuesday during the trial of Tansil, who
\nstands accused of siphoning off some US$449 million worth of
\nfunds from the government's Bank Pembangunan Indonesia (Bapindo).<\/p>\n
Five witnesses testified at Central Jakarta District Court,
\nthree of whom were directors of the Golden Key Group or its
\nsubsidiaries.<\/p>\n
Maj. Gen. (ret.) Kusno Achsan Jein, the president director of
\nGolden Key and six of its affiliates, claimed he had little
\nknowledge of the business transactions conducted by Tansil
\nalthough he signed many of the checks, loan applications and
\nrequisitions for letters of credit.<\/p>\n
\"I signed a lot of blank forms,\" sighed the 71-year-old Kusno.<\/p>\n
He said that he had no authority within the group and made no
\nattempt to try to understand the complexities of the business.<\/p>\n
Kusno said Tansil owned all of Golden Key's shares although he
\nand four other people were registered as owning some of the
\ncompany's stock.<\/p>\n
He said he never presided over a shareholders meeting despite
\nhis position as the company's president director.<\/p>\n
Insiders<\/p>\n
Tansil, who is being charged with corruption, is being charged
\nwith obtaining and cashing in on huge loans from Bapindo,
\nbypassing normal banking practices. The prosecution alleges that
\nTansil was assisted by Bapindo insiders.<\/p>\n
Three other witnesses who testified on Tuesday said they were
\nalso registered as directors and shareholders at various Golden
\nKey affiliates although they only found out about this when the
\nBapindo scandal became public earlier this year.<\/p>\n
They include Suhanda, who worked as a mechanic and car washer
\nat Golden Key's headquarters in Pecenongan, Central Jakarta;
\nSuhendi, a cleaner at Pecenongan; and Irianto, an electrician.<\/p>\n
All three said they were unaware that they were registered as
\nshareholders and company directors.<\/p>\n
Suhanda said his salary was a mere Rp 140,000 a month.<\/p>\n
The prosecution also pointed out that Tansil forged the
\nbiodata of some of his hand-picked directors for the purpose of
\nregistering them as shareholders and directors.<\/p>\n
Suhandi, for example, completed elementary school only, but in
\nhis biodata was listed as possessing a college degree.<\/p>\n
A fifth witness at the hearing, Antonius Widjaya, who is a
\nlegitimate college graduate, also said he signed several
\ndocuments for Tansil in his capacity as Golden Key director, but
\nmaintained he never knew what the documents were for.<\/p>\n
When asked to respond to this damaging testimony, Tansil said
\nhe had no objection to any of it.<\/p>\n
During the hearing, Tansil, his lawyers and the five Golden
\nKey witnesses were again the target of verbal abuse from
\nspectators who packed the courtroom gallery.<\/p>\n
The hearing was adjourned until Saturday when the court will
\nhear the testimony of four Bapindo executives, including Maman
\nSuparman, who is also being tried in connection with the case.
