The Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) of the Indonesian\nNational Police has uncovered a case of gold smuggling sourced from\nillegal mining in various regions of Indonesia to Hong Kong. The\nsyndicate used a body strapping modus operandi.<\/p>\n
The body strapping method involves smuggling refined gold by\nattaching it to the body, allowing it to evade airport security\nchecks.<\/p>\n
In this case, police have arrested suspect R, an Indonesian citizen.\nHe was arrested on Tuesday morning (25\/8) after landing from Japan.<\/p>\n
Police are coordinating with the Financial Transaction Reports and\nAnalysis Centre (PPATK) to trace the syndicate\u2019s financial flows and\nassets.<\/p>\n
\u2018From these transaction documents, we will attempt to coordinate with\nPPATK to trace their financial transactions and where their assets are\nstored. We will pursue and confiscate assets in order to recover\nproceeds from the sale of illegal gold or illegal gold smuggling to Hong\nKong,\u2019 said Brigadier General Mohammad Irhamni, Director of Certain\nCrimes at Bareskrim.<\/p>\n
Bareskrim subsequently raided a house used as a base for illegal gold\nrefining in the Penjaringan area of North Jakarta. The raided house is\nlocated on Jalan Cendana Golf III, Kamal Muara, Penjaringan. The search\nwas conducted on Tuesday evening (25\/8).<\/p>\n
The house was occupied by a Chinese national with the initials GCZ,\nwho is now suspected of having fled abroad.<\/p>\n
Investigators seized a gold detector unit, digital scales, grinding\nequipment, and an airsoft gun complete with CO2 gas canister and\nammunition. Officers also confiscated Rp 60 million in cash.\nInvestigators also secured several laptops, mobile phones, and financial\ntransaction documents.<\/p>\n
\u2018The location is suspected to be a workshop for illegal gold refining\nand processing activities by a smuggling network to China operated by a\nChinese foreign national,\u2019 Irhamni explained.<\/p>\n
