Gold mining in Maluku<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): PT Prima Lirang Mining, a gold mining company
\noperating in Southeast Maluku district, will expand its
\nexploration activities in the district with a total investment of
\nUS$2 million.<\/p>\n
The company's president, Gerry Mbatemoy, was quoted by Antara
\nas saying yesterday that Gensor had allocated US$1 million for
\nthe first phase of the expansion program.<\/p>\n
The expansion seemed to have been decided soon after Prima
\nLirang was acquired by Gensor of South Africa from Shell-Metal
\nSection of the Shell Group last November.<\/p>\n
Mbatemoy indicated that the expansion project will focus on
\nthree islands: Teon, Nila and Serua -- all in Southeast Maluku.<\/p>\n
Currently the company's mining activities are centered in
\nWetar island, Maluku's southernmost island which borders on East
\nTimor province, with annual production capacity of five tons of
\ngold.<\/p>\n
Mbatemoy said the expansion project is timely because his
\ncompany's gold reserves in Wetar, which have been exploited since
\n1990, are expected to deplete by 1997. (rid)<\/p>",
