Go tough with overstayers<\/p>\n

Foreign laborers have taken Malaysia in a big way and some
\nunhealthy phenomena and social issues have been seen as
\ninevitable fallout.<\/p>\n
We should remember that Indonesian workers created some
\ncommotions in the country not that long ago, seriously
\nthreatening the security of this country. Foreign maids,
\nmeanwhile, have also become the root of family problems while
\nsome of them have also fallen victim to cases of maltreatment and
\nviolence.<\/p>\n
And because the situation has become so serious nowadays that
\nthe government should not ignore their mere existence anymore. As
\na result, expulsion orders have been passed down and foreign
\nlaborers working in a broad spectrum of industries have been sent
\npacking.<\/p>\n
Mass inflow of foreign workers is itself an unhealthy social
\nphenomenon and is likely to generate a host of social issues such
\nas strikes, riots, maltreatment of employers' kids by maids, and
\nof maids by their employers, not to mention the robberies
\nperpetrated by Indonesian workers here.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, when women complained to the government that
\noverstaying Chinese ladies have seduced their husbands and
\ndestroyed their families, deputy home minister Chor Chee Heung
\nreplied that these women should stop complaining but instead
\n\"watch their own husbands properly\".<\/p>\n
According to Chor, these women have not been able to manage
\ntheir families properly that they try to put the blame on the
\nauthorities. To the deputy minister the extramarital affairs
\ninvolving Chinese ladies have nothing much to do with the
\ngovernment, and as long as the wives are willing to \"take care of
\ntheir husbands properly\", their husbands would most definitely
\nbehave themselves.<\/p>\n
Chor's rhetoric is by no means novel, but it can only come
\nfrom the mouth of a man, not a deputy minister. Only old-
\nfashioned men would still think that a wife should be blamed for
\nher husband's indecent behavior. As a man, Chor should know that
\nmen are easily seduced by women, but his irresponsible remarks --
\nnot unlike what superstar Jackie Chan has said, \"I've done
\nsomething that all men would do,\" -- do not go well with his
\nstature as a deputy minister.<\/p>\n
It is nevertheless understandable that perhaps after Chor met
\nthe visiting delegates from the Department of Laborer Protection
\nof China, he made the above remarks just to please his guests in
\nthe name of \"promoting Sino-Malaysian cooperation\".<\/p>\n
A supposedly complicated issue involving family values has
\nsuddenly been simplified by our deputy minister into a lesson
\ndirected at Malaysian women.<\/p>\n
If we are unable to stop importing foreign laborers to meet
\nthe country's development needs, at least we should learn how to
\ncontrol them.<\/p>\n
In this respect, the government has the obligation to round up
\noverstaying foreign workers.<\/p>\n
How to effectively control overstayers remains a problem that
\nthe authorities must come face to face with. Pointing finger at
\nwomen for not taking good care of their husbands while failing to
\nunderstand the real picture, is utterly unfair to the \"victims\".<\/p>",
