Go international, doctors advised<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Justice Oetojo Oesman said yesterday
\nthat physicians should be the most prepared profession in
\nentering the globalization era as it has long been associated
\nwith various international activities and associations.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a session during the 23rd congress of the
\nIndonesian Medical Association in Padang, West Sumatra, Oetojo
\nsaid physicians must be ready to compete in the domestic and
\ninternational market.<\/p>\n
He said as trade borders collapse in the globalization era,
\nIndonesian doctors should not lose out in competition and should
\nbe able to stand on par with their foreign counterparts.<\/p>\n
Oetojo said that while the medical profession basically
\nentails humanitarianism, economic factors also play a major role
\nin its development.<\/p>\n
\"In the global competition, only the best will acquire the
\nbest place,\" Antara quoted Oetojo as saying.<\/p>\n
Oetojo also urged doctors to improve their knowledge and
\nskills to reduce the number of malpractice cases.<\/p>\n
The five-day congress in Padang which began Tuesday features
\nseminars and symposiums on contemporary health problems and
\ntreatment.<\/p>\n
During the congress, the association will also elect the
\ndeputy chairman, the head of various committees and the chairman
\nof the Medical Code of Ethics Council for 1997\/2000.<\/p>\n
It will also issue recommendations concerning doctors'
\npracticing licenses, diagnosis procedures of HIV\/AIDS, human
\ncloning, malpractice and the improvement of skills and scientific
\nknowledge to face the global era.<\/p>\n
In a separate session with the Indonesian Medics' Wives
\nAssociation, State Minister of Women's Role Mien Sugandhi said
\nthe nation should master science and technology to reduce
\ndependency on foreign physicians.<\/p>\n
In her written statement read by the official of the
\nassociation, Zakiah Alatas, Mien also called for a campaign
\nagainst juvenile delinquency to counter problems like drug
\naddiction among youngsters.<\/p>\n
She said that the campaign would help prepare the youngsters
