'Go after illegal liquor traders'<\/p>\n
In a bid to curb liquor consumption, particularly among minors,
\nthe city administration issued a circular banning supermarkets
\nfrom selling drinks with over 5 percent alcohol. The Jakarta Post
\ninterviewed some residents about the policy.<\/p>\n
Anton, 35, is a public relations manager of an apartment
\nbuilding in Central Jakarta. He lives in Depok, West Java.<\/p>\n
Frankly, I do drink liquor, but I never get drunk because I
\nusually drink in moderation.<\/p>\n
I agree that there should be a limitation of liquor outlets.
\nAs you know there are many young people who are alcoholics.<\/p>\n
Although the city administration has issued a regulation
\nlimiting liquor sales, we find liquor outlets in many places,
\nlegal or otherwise.<\/p>\n
The problem is that those outlets do not screen people, even
\nthose under 17 years old can easily buy liquor.<\/p>\n
James Sinaga, 40, is an employee of a recruitment agency for
\nexpatriate workers. He lives in Cilandak subdistrict, South
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
I do not know if supermarkets have been banned from selling
\nliquor, since I have not been bought any in the past three
\nmonths.<\/p>\n
But, I think, it is better for the police and other law
\nenforcement institutions to concentrate on illegal liquor sellers
\nin small shops, which readily sell to anybody, including
\nchildren.<\/p>\n
The police must punish the shop owners found to have sold
\nliquor to minors.<\/p>\n
I think the government must allow supermarkets to sell liquor
\nbut with stronger monitoring, meaning that only adults are
\nallowed to buy the products.<\/p>\n
The government must revoke their licenses if the supermarket
\nviolates the regulations.<\/p>\n
