GM keen on stake in Proton<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): U.S.-based auto giant General Motors Corp.
\nis keen to take a stake in Malaysian carmaker Perusahaan Otomobil
\nNasional Bhd. (Proton), a newspaper reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
General Motors chief economic specialist Mustafa Mohaterem was
\nquoted as saying in Detroit that the global chances of Proton,
\ncurrently affiliated with Japan's Mitsubishi Motors Corp., would
\nbe enhanced by an equity partnership.<\/p>\n
"Our opinion is that buying equity in Proton is more
\nattractive than taking up a stake in South Korean car makers,"
\nMustafa told the Malay-language newspaper Berita Harian.<\/p>\n
"This is because Proton has a production rate that meets
\ndemand for its cars while South Korean companies have a
\nproduction capacity that is far higher than demand," he said.<\/p>\n
Mustafa said small car makers like Proton, which is 16
\npercent-owned by Mitsubishi, needed bigger partners to be
\ncompetitive in the global market.<\/p>\n
General Motors already has an indirect stake in the Malaysian
\nauto industry through its 37 percent-owned Japanese affiliate
\nIsuzu Motors Co. Ltd. which holds 20 percent of Malaysia Truck
\nand Bus Sdn. Bhd.<\/p>",
