Gloria in trouble II<\/p>\n
Philippine Arroyo perhaps believed she was taking pro-active
\naction. But in apologizing for a 'lapse in judgment' in talking
\nto an election official last year and announcing that her husband
\nwas leaving the country to 'remove himself from any situation
\nthat will cast doubt on my presidency', she raised even more
\nquestions among her critics.<\/p>\n
Her husband, son and brother-in-law are accused of benefiting
\nfrom illegal gambling, an allegation they deny. Arroyo clearly is
\ndetermined to stay on. And indeed, there is little likelihood she
\ncan be forced from office. Another People Power movement is not
\non the cards.<\/p>\n
To be sure, Arroyo has said that 'nothing can stop my
\nadministration from implementing...our reform agenda'.<\/p>\n
That is precisely what ordinary folks hope. But as one middle-
\nclass professional in Makati that this newspaper spoke with
\nyesterday suggested, perhaps the best way to achieve this is to
\n'prove she means business and put all the questions to rest'.
