Globalization and Westernization<\/p>\n
Referring to Professor Christopher Lingle's article entitled
\nRI and globalization debate: Embracing 'contract culture', which
\nappeared at The Jakarta Post on Dec. 28, I am impressed by the
\narticulation and clarity of his debate on the issue of
\nglobalization and its impact. However, I disagree with his
\nstatement that we must not confuse globalization with
\n"Westernization".<\/p>\n
Our trade agreements are based on Western and American free
\nmarket economic policies, which has led to a massive extraction
\nof natural resources from Indonesia, which in turn has decreased
\nIndonesia's sustainability. Fair trade is a question that remains
\nunanswered.<\/p>\n
Therefore shared prosperity cannot possibly be "equal". I
\nwould like very much for Prof. Lingle explain to me how
\nglobalization and Westernization can be considered separate
\nentities, since most economic development in South East Asia is
\nbased on both Western and American economic theory and practice.
\nCapitalism or free market economies should not be assessed only
\nfor their successes, but also for their failures.<\/p>\n
