Global cooperation sought for better environment<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Closer cooperation between advanced and
\ndeveloping countries is the only answer to prevent environmental
\ndegradation, the President said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Speaking to 250 guests at the opening of the Third World
\nInternational Conference on Zero Emissions at State Palace,
\nPresident Soeharto cited resource exploitation and environmental
\npollution as some of the most important issues.<\/p>\n
He said poverty was a causes of environmental degradation in
\nthe Third World, while a wasteful way of life in industrialized
\nnations led to pollution and an abuse of resources.<\/p>\n
Soeharto warned that future generations would suffer if
\necological disruption was not stopped.<\/p>\n
\"Our children and grandchildren will live in a completely
\nchaotic environment,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He called for international cooperation to help developing
\ncountries reach higher economic growth and encouraged other
\nnations to economize their natural resources.<\/p>\n
The three-day international conference was jointly organized
\nby the Ministry of Environment and the United Nations University
\nin Tokyo.<\/p>\n
Fiji's President Ratu K.T.T. Mara and the university's rector,
\nHeitor Gurgulino de Souza, attended the conference. Namibian
\nPresident Sam Nujoma is scheduled to appear as a speaker at the
\nconference.<\/p>\n
Nujoma and his entourage arrived here yesterday afternoon for
\na five-day visit to attend the conference and strengthen
\nbilateral relations.<\/p>\n
The president and his wife, Theopoldine K. Nujoma, were
\ngreeted on the steps of State Palace by Soeharto, Vice President
\nTry Sutrisno and his wife and Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono.<\/p>\n
Foreign Minister Ali Alatas and his wife, Yunisa, welcomed the
\nstate guest at Halim Perdanakusuma airport.<\/p>\n
President Soeharto underlined the importance of South-South
\ncooperation to his guest, while Nujoma called on Indonesian
\nprivate enterprises to invest in the landlocked country,
\nMoerdiono said.<\/p>\n
\"The President told Nujoma that, while little can be done from
\nthe financial side, there is still a lot to be achieved from
\nexperience and technical exchanges,\" Moerdiono said.<\/p>\n
There are no concrete figures on trade relations between the
\ntwo countries because there is no direct trade between them.<\/p>\n
Indonesian commodities such as textiles, sports shoes, rattan
\nproducts and instant noodles reach Namibia through South Africa.<\/p>\n
The Namibian leader's entourage includes Minister of Foreign
\nAffairs Theo-Ben Gurirab, Minister of Trade and Industry Hidipo
\nHamutenya and other high ranking officials.<\/p>\n
In April, Ali Alatas and Gurirab signed an economic and
\ntechnical agreement to boost bilateral trade in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"The Namibian leaders told Soeharto that his country was once
\nthe victim of apartheid and colonialism and now was concentrating
\non its economic development,\" Moerdiono said<\/p>\n
This morning the two leaders will hold bilateral talks. In the
\nafternoon Nujoma will attend a luncheon with members of the
\nIndonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In the evening
\nSoeharto will host a banquet to honor his guest.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, Nujoma will visit the state-owned palm oil
\nplantation PTP IV in Pabatu, North Sumatra, and then spend a
\nnight in Lake Toba, Parapat, before leaving for Bali on Sunday.<\/p>\n
