Glass factory workers protest<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): About 170 employees of glass manufacturing
\ncompany PT Alamkaca Prabawa Indonesia in Tangerang stopped work
\nyesterday in solidarity for two of their friends who were
\nseverely injured in a work accident.<\/p>\n
Sukerman, 34, suffered a broken back and smashed teeth, and
\nMulyono, 30, damaged his hand Tuesday night when they were hit by
\na one-ton box of glass products which fell before it was put into
\na container.<\/p>\n
The work stoppage was intended mainly to force the company's
\nmanagement to pay for the victims' medical treatment, one of the
\nworkers, who asked for anonymity, said.<\/p>\n
"We urge the management to give a financial guarantee
\nregarding Sukerman's operation," he said.<\/p>\n
Doctors at Usada Insani hospital, where Sukerman is being
\ntreated, have declined to operate on the victim due to the
\nabsence of a guarantee from the company.<\/p>\n
Mulyono is recovering at his house in Sepatan, Tangerang.<\/p>\n
The management invited 20 representatives of the workers to
\ndiscuss the case yesterday.<\/p>\n
"The management won't give any statement at the moment,"
