Giving access to world's top universities<\/p>\n
Most international schools in Indonesia, particularly in
\nJakarta, have designed their programs to give students access to
\nthe world's top universities.<\/p>\n
The schools not only adopt their national curriculum but also
\noffer internationally respected curriculums such as International
\nBaccalaureate (IB), Advanced Placement (AP) and Cambridge
\nInternational Examination.<\/p>\n
With such educational programs, international schools have
\nbecome the choice not only for expatriate students but also local
\nstudents.<\/p>\n
Major international schools such as the Jakarta International
\nSchool (JIS), the British International School (BIS), the Gandhi
\nMemorial International School (GMIS), the North Jakarta
\nInternational School (NJIS), Australian International School
\n(AIS), Singapore International School (SIS) and the New Zealand
\nInternational School (NZIS) are also popular among Indonesian
\nstudents.<\/p>\n
The schools accept students from different nationalities,
\nproviding opportunities for young people to study in a truly
\nglobal environment.<\/p>\n
The British International School Jakarta, the majority of
\nwhose students are British, follows both the National Curriculum
\nfor England and Wales, especially for preschool through year 11,
\nand the IB curriculum for secondary school students.<\/p>\n
The National Curriculum for England and Wales emphasizes the
\nimportance of broadness, with each student expected to have a
\nwide range of concepts, experiences, knowledge and skills.<\/p>\n
With its campus in Bintaro, South Jakarta, BIS Jakarta offers
\neducational programs for nursery school through the secondary
\nlevel.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta International School (JIS), which has 2,350
\nstudents from 60 nationalities, is another school that offers
\nboth a national curriculum and the IB curriculum.<\/p>\n
The JIS' regular curriculum is based primarily on the North
\nAmerican model, with courses given in English.<\/p>\n
The school's elementary school curriculum puts more emphasis
\non language arts and mathematics. Its middle years curriculum
\nstresses skill development and content.<\/p>\n
\"The high school curriculum focuses on college and university
\npreparation, offering the International Baccalaureate diploma and
\nAdvanced Placement International diploma,\" JIS says.<\/p>\n
High school students can take either a regular diploma, an IB
\ndiploma or an AP diploma.<\/p>\n
\"Students who do not wish to participate in the full IB
\ndiploma program but who are interested in the challenge of a
\nparticular subject can enroll in the IB course of their choice if
\nit fits with their schedule,\" the school says.<\/p>\n
It said that high school graduates were expected to be
\nskillful, self-reliant citizens ready to contribute in a complex
\nand changing world.<\/p>\n
JIS' campuses are located in Pondok Indah, South Jakarta and
\non Jl. Pattimura, also in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
At the Gandhi Memorial International School (GMIS) located in
\nKemayoran, North Jakarta, the IB curriculum is offered across all
\ngrades, from elementary to secondary school, following the
\nschool's success in implementing the IB Diploma program, said
\nGMIS principal AP Singh.<\/p>\n
GMIS, which currently has students from 40 different
\nnationalities, educates children from nursery school (three years
\nold) to an IB diploma (18 years old).<\/p>\n
The IB Diploma program is a demanding preuniversity course
\ncreated by the Geneva-based International Baccalaureate
\nOrganization (IBO). The internationally accredited organization
\nalso offers a Primary Year Program (PYP) for students between
\nthree and 12 years of age, and a Middle Year Program (MYP) for
\nstudents between the ages of 11 and 16.<\/p>\n
Apart from the IB diploma program, GMIS also offers other
\ninternationally acclaimed programs like the Cambridge
\nInternational Examination -- UK. It is called IGCSE, or more
\npopularly O-Level.<\/p>\n
At the Australian International School (AIS), both the primary
\nschool and secondary school curriculums are based on the
\nAustralian Capital Territory (ACT), but also draw on the best
\npractices from other states and territories in Australia as well
\nas other international systems.<\/p>\n
\"Student learning is outcomes based, characterized by an
\ninquiry approach with students working at many different levels
\nwithin year groups,\" said AIS marketing staff member Julie
\nHilton.<\/p>\n
For its secondary students at the senior level, the system
\nbecomes more assessment-based, providing a sound preparation for
\nstudents wishing to enter university, she said.<\/p>\n
At the end of year 12, students receive a university
\nadmissions index (UAI) score, and this score will determine which
\ncourse and university they can enter, either in Australia or
\nworldwide, she said.<\/p>\n
\"We believe learning builds on prior knowledge and is enhanced
\nby the process of inquiry, exploration, discovery and thoughtful
\nreflection. Our teachers perform the very important role of
\nfacilitators who encourage each child's search for knowledge and
\nunderstanding,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Students can absorb more if their learning is related to real
\nlife experiences, so \"we provide opportunities for children to
\nconstruct meaning through developmentally appropriate,
\nstimulating and challenging experiences\", she said.<\/p>\n
A child's learning continues beyond the classroom and a
\npartnership between the school and home is essential for each
\nstudent's success.<\/p>\n
At AIS, teachers and students share the responsibility for the
\neducational process, including critical thinking, creative
\nproblem solving and decision-making. \"Our aim is to foster in
\neach child a love of learning and the desire to realize
\nindividual potential. We seek to instill in our students a sense
\nof responsibility, an appreciation for cultural diversity and a
\nrespect for the rights of individuals,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Established in Indonesia in 1996, AIS has a campus in Kemang,
\nSouth Jakarta, for kindergarten and on Jl. Jati Murni, Pejaten,
\nSouth Jakarta, for secondary school students.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, to help children develop to their full potential
\nthrough the very best learning environment, the New Zealand
\nInternational School (NZIS) not only adopts the New Zealand
\nCurriculum Framework for K-9 or equivalent to junior high school,
\nbut also the Cambridge International Examination (CIE) Curriculum
\nfor secondary school.<\/p>\n
NZIS principal Paul Williamson said the curriculum framework
\nfocused on individual students as the center of teaching and
\nlearning.<\/p>\n
At NZIS, secondary school students are offered a curriculum
\nspecially designed for preuniversity preparation that refers to
\nthe Cambridge International Examination Curriculum.<\/p>\n
\"Recognizing that international students today are mobile and
\nable to access courses anywhere in the world provided that they
\ngain recognized qualifications, we choose the CIE curriculum as
\nit is accepted worldwide by universities, institutes of higher
\neducation, military schools and prospective employers,\"
\nWilliamson noted.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, there are also international schools that adopt a
\ncurriculum accredited by overseas accrediting agencies. They
\ninclude the North Jakarta International School (NJIS).<\/p>\n
NJIS was established in 1990 as a result of the decision made
\nby the Jakarta International School (JIS) in October 1989 to
\nlimit its growth and to assist in the development of other
\nschools and options for expatriate students.<\/p>\n
\"NJIS is licensed by the Ministry of Education to provide
\nschooling for the children of expatriates residing in Jakarta and
\noptions for expatriate students,\" NJIS admission director Anna
\nRangkuti said.<\/p>\n
NJIS, located on Jl. Kelapa Gading, East Jakarta, offers
\nkindergarten and secondary programs.<\/p>\n
NJIS' curriculum refers to the curriculum recommended by
\nAmerican accrediting agencies and the European Council of
\nInternational Schools.<\/p>\n
\"The US-based curriculum reflects strategies for effective
\nteaching and learning,<\/p>\n
\"The curriculum encourages students to be lifelong learners,
\nproductive and involved citizens in changing global society\", she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Currently, the school has 308 students representing 18
\nnationalities.<\/p>",
