Give more 'time to Gus Dur'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Abdurrahman \"Gus Dur\" Wahid should be
\ngiven more time to improve his performance rather than being
\nasked to step aside or take a leave of absence, his younger
\nbrother Salahuddin said on Monday.<\/p>\n
\"In my opinion, the best course today is for everyone to give
\nGus Dur the opportunity to improve the performance of his
\ncabinet,\" Salahuddin told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
He was clarifying a statement attributed to him in the Post's
\nheadline on Monday in which he suggested that his brother step
\naside and make way for Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri to
\ntake the lead.<\/p>\n
\"I never suggested that Gus Dur resign,\" he said on Monday.
\n\"In my view there is no need to consider resignation. Such a
\nquestion should only be considered when Gus Dur is called to
\naccount before the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR).\"<\/p>\n
Some of the President's critics and political opponents say
\ndelegating more power to the Vice President could be a viable
\nalternative to the current impasse.<\/p>\n
They referred to an MPR ruling enacted last year calling for
\npower sharing between the president and his deputy, and the
\nensuing presidential decree delineating the responsibilities
\nbetween the two leaders.<\/p>\n
Salahuddin concurred with this view. \"Gus Dur should seriously
\nimplement Presidential Decree No. 121\/2000 on the delegation of
\ndaily presidential duties to Megawati,\" he said. (dja)<\/p>",
