A eight-year-old girl is in a coma at Sardjito Hospital in
\nYogyakarta after attempting to commit suicide on July 5.<\/p>\n
Novia Anggi Fatono Bhakti has been in a coma since trying to
\ncommit suicide reportedly after failing to be promoted to the
\nfourth grade at her elementary school.<\/p>\n
The girl lives with her parents, father Sumirat and mother
\nSiti Juariah, in Argomulyo village in Sedayu Bantul.<\/p>\n
Sumirat, who works as a T-shirt maker, said that before her
\nsuicide attempt he told Anggi he could not afford to buy her a
\nbicycle.<\/p>\n
"I asked Anggi to be patient. At the time, she was watching a
\ncrime show on television that coincidentally was about a suicide
\nattempt," Sumirat said.<\/p>\n
He said that Anggi then went to her room and locked the door.
\nAt the same time, Anggi's brother cut himself and Sumirat wanted
\nto get some antiseptic out of Anggi's room.<\/p>\n
"When I knocked on the door and called her name, I did not get
\na reply. I broke into the room and found Anggi hanging from a
\nrope," Sumirat said.<\/p>\n
The head of the village Welfare Office, Wagiyanto, speculated
\nthat the girl attempted to kill herself after failing to be
\npromoted to the fourth grade at SDN Pedes II elementary school in
\nArgomulyo.<\/p>\n
"Since failing to graduate she rarely played with her friends
\nlike she used to, instead staying at home," Wagiyanto said.<\/p>\n
A spokesman at Sardjito Hospital, Tresnu Heru Nugroho, said
\nAnggi's care was being paid for by Askes insurance for the poor.<\/p>\n
Two years ago, Heriyanto, a resident of the Central Java town
\nof Garut, attempted to commit suicide because he could not afford
\nthe Rp 2,500 (26 US cents) to pay for extracurricular activities
\nat school. The boy suffered permanent brain damage as a result of
\nthe attempt.<\/p>\n
On April 17 of this year, Bunyamin, a high school student in
\nTegal regency, killed himself after his parents were unable to
\npay his school fees. A week later, 15-year-old Eko Haryanto
\nattempted suicide reportedly after being unable to pay his
\nmonthly school fees for the past nine months.<\/p>\n
In May, five-year-old Renaldi Sembiring killed himself,
\nreportedly after his parents refused to allow him to go to a
\nfriend's birthday party.<\/p>",
