Ginandjar receives honorary degree<\/p>\n
Jakarta (JP): State Minister of National Development Planning
\nGinandjar Kartasasmita has been awarded an honorary degree by a
\nleading American university in acknowledgement of his eminent
\npublic service.<\/p>\n
Northeastern University, in Boston, one of America's oldest
\neducational institutes, conferred him with the title Doctor of
\nPublic Service on June 18 at the school's annual commencement
\nceremony, the Antara news agency reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
Ginandjar, 53, was recognized with the honoris causa
\ndesignation for his initiatives in cooperative education, the
\nAntara news agency reported quoting Sri Edi Swasono, the chairman
\nof the Indonesian Council of Cooperatives who attended the
\nceremony.<\/p>\n
According to Sri Edi, the university lauded Ginandjar's strong
\ncommitment to sustained economic growth, stability and equality.<\/p>\n
Sri Edi said, of the 3,500 graduates and undergraduates sent
\noff during the university commencement at the Boston's Celtic
\nstadium, 10 were Indonesians, two of them obtaining their
\nmaster's degree magna cum laude and one cum laude.<\/p>\n
In May this year, Ginandjar, a three-star air marshal, was
\nalso presented with a Doctor Honoris Causa degree by Takushoka
\nUniversity in Tokyo.<\/p>\n
Ginandjar had strongly backed Northeastern University's
\ninitiatives to create cooperative education programs with
\nIndonesian state and private companies engaged in the oil,
\ntelecommunications and power sectors, the Indonesian consulate
\ngeneral in New York said in a press release for the occasion.<\/p>\n
\"He has also agreed to establish a Secretariat of Cooperative
\nEducation in Indonesia and to fund a Northeastern Home Country
\nCo-op Placement Project,\" according to the release.<\/p>\n
In April, the government and PT Freeport Indonesia pledged to
\ncontinue an undergraduate cooperative education program led by
\nthe university, which is a leader in cooperative education, with
\nGinandjar's support.<\/p>\n
Ginandjar joined the government cabinet as a junior minister
\nin 1983.<\/p>\n
Born in Bandung, West Java, in 1941, he earned a degree in
\npublic administration and chemical engineering at the Tokyo
\nUniversity of Agriculture and Technology in 1965.<\/p>\n
He and his wife, Yutin Harlotina, now live in Jakarta and have
