Ginandjar finally selected for MPR from West Java<\/p>\n
BANDUNG (JP): Coordinating Minister for Economy, Finance and
\nIndustry Ginandjar Kartasasmita has been selected as a member of
\nthe West Java regional representative in the People's
\nConsultative Assembly (MPR).<\/p>\n
Ginandjar and Habib Syarif Muhammad, chairman of West Java
\nchapter of the National Awakening Party, secured the most votes
\nhere on Thursday evening to grab the last two of five seats to
\nrepresent West Java in the Assembly.<\/p>\n
Ginandjar obtained 91 votes, followed by Habib with 51 votes.
\nAnother candidate, Burhanuddin Somawinata, chairman of the United
\nDevelopment Party's provincial chapter, just missed out as he
\ncame one vote shy of Habib.<\/p>\n
The provincial council comprises 98 members, with the
\nIndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle having the largest number
\nof seats with 30.<\/p>\n
Ginandjar has said he will resign from his ministry if
\nappointed a legislative representative.<\/p>\n
The newly elected representative will join three other elected
\nregional representatives from West Java -- Bandung Institute of
\nTechnology (ITB) rector Lilik Hendrajaya, businessman D. Sutrisno
\nand Solichin G.P. of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle
\n-- who were chosen on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Each province is allotted five representatives in the 700-
\nmember Assembly who in November will elect a new president.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile in Ujungpandang, South Sulawesi, members of the
\nprovincial chapter of the Golkar Party said it would forward A.A.
\nBaramuli, chairman of the Supreme Advisory Council (DPA), as one
\nof the candidates for the province's regional representatives.<\/p>\n
Baramuli's younger brother, Eddy Baramuli, who is vice
\nchairman of Golkar's South Sulawesi chapter, claimed that the
\nparty would throw its full support behind the senior Baramuli.<\/p>\n
\"Golkar will fight for Baramuli as he is a national figure
\nfrom our province,\" Eddy said, adding the party would first seek
\nPresident B.J. Habibie's permission as Baramuli was a state
\nofficial.<\/p>\n
However, party sources told The Jakarta Post that Baramuli was
\nnot among the leading candidates to be nominated by Golkar,
\npointing to Minister of Information Yunus Yosfiah and businessman
