Gigi lashes out at Rhoma's remark<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The penchant of self-appointed dangdut music king Rhoma
\nIrama (shown in photo) for slating younger artists landed him in
\nhot water recently.<\/p>\n
This time the target of his criticism was once-popular pop-
\nrock band Gigi.<\/p>\n
In a widely-publicized remark broadcast by almost all TV
\ngossip shows, Rhoma made a stinging comment on Gigi, saying the
\nquartet was a frustrated band unable to stay the course of
\nplaying straight rock music.<\/p>\n
Rhoma appeared to be commenting on Gigi's latest outing, a
\nreligion-themed record including a song titled Raihlah Kemenangan
\n(Reach for Victory), which has sold impressively and has even
\ngone platinum.<\/p>\n
The album, released during Ramadhan, was targeted at Muslim
\nfolks due to celebrate Idul Fitri last month. Rhoma might have
\nbeen irked by Gigi's rendition of mostly traditional Islamic
\ntunes.<\/p>\n
Commenting on Rhoma's remark, Gigi management said that it
\nregretted such a statement as it was made by one of the country's
\nmusic legends.<\/p>\n
\"His works may have won ample recognition, but that doesn't
\nmean that he (Rhoma) can say whatever he wants about other
\npeople's music,\" Gigi publicist Dhani Pete said in a statement,
\nquoted by Detik.com newsportal.<\/p>\n
Earlier last year, Rhoma, whose daytime job requires him to
\njuggle between singing and sermonizing, mobilized scores of
\ndangdut singers to disown singer Inul Daratista for her \"erotic
\ndance moves\".<\/p>\n
Earlier this year, gossip columns got their revenge when they
\npublished photos of Rhoma leaving the apartment of aspiring
\nfemale dangdut singer Angel Lelga in the middle of the night. He
\neventually stated that he had married the girl, but soon after
