In the context of bolstering the establishment of clean
\ngovernance, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has
\nissued an appeal that government officials do not receive gift
\npackages. This appeal has received a mixed reaction from the
\npublic.<\/p>\n
Talking about gifts, we must consider the following:
\n* Whether one is sending a gift parcel to someone they know;
\n* Whether a gift is sent with a certain motive;
\n* Whether the recipient knows the motive;
\n* That there are particular occasions when sending gifts is
\nnormal -- generally a religious holy day;
\n* Whether the value of the gift and its contents will influence
\nthe recipient's view or stance. In the past, the U.S. government
\nstipulated the maximum limit of the value of a gift for officials
\nwas US$25;
\n* Whether the response of the recipient of the parcel will be
\ninfluenced by the value of the gift.<\/p>\n
In this context, gift shops should not unfavorably react to
\nthe appeal from the KPK. They should ask for an advance payment
\nfor the parcels they sell and if the parcels are returned, they
\nwill still get paid.<\/p>\n
I used to be a chief inspector at PT Caltex Pacific Indonesia
\nand always returned the parcels sent to my home to the gift shops
\nconcerned -- with the knowledge of my superior, of course.<\/p>\n
