How do contraceptive pills have anything to do with dandruff or
\nspotless skin?<\/p>\n
Apparently, those pimples and dandruff you have been dying to
\neradicate for ages, might be hormone-related problems and it only
\nrequires you to swallow contraceptive pills to overcome them, of
\ncourse you should see a dermatologist first.<\/p>\n
According to Oktafandhi -- obstetrics and gynecology
\nspecialist at the Bintaro International Hospital, Tangerang --
\nsome contraceptive pills actually have other benefits beyond
\npreventing pregnancy.<\/p>\n
The pills can normalize irregular menstruation cycles, reduce
\npain and cramps, before and during menstruation and make the
\nmenstruation cycle shorter.<\/p>\n
"Apart from that, the pills can also cure acne, reduce
\noverproduced oil, clearing up one's skin or eliminating
\ndandruff," Oktafandhi said in a recent discussion held by Cosmo
\n90.4 FM radio station.<\/p>\n
The ones that work for acne are the low-dose combined oral
\ncontraceptives which contain Cyproterone Acetate (CPA) and Etinil
\nEstradiol (EE).<\/p>\n
The substance balances the production of the male sex hormone
\ncalled androgen -- a hormone that can also be found in women, but
\nusually in much smaller amounts. The hormone functions as a
\nlibido booster.<\/p>\n
However, some women unfortunately produce higher amounts of
\nandrogen (hyper-androgen), which results in irregular
\nmenstruation cycles and also the overproduction of oil that
\ncauses skin problems like acne and dandruff.<\/p>\n
In some cases, hyper-androgen can also cause hirsutism, or
\nexcessive growth of hair of normal or abnormal distribution
\n(remember dangdut singer Iis Dahlia with her mustache?).<\/p>\n
"As the source of those problems are androgen, then it's best
\nto counter it with an anti-androgen or in this case CPA, a unique
\nprogesterone with strong anti-androgenic characteristics,"
\nOktafandhi said.<\/p>\n
Progesterone is the female sex hormone that arranges monthly
\nmenstruation cycles and maintains a pregnancy. Another important
\nhormone is estrogen which stimulates the development of female
\nsecondary sex characteristics.<\/p>\n
In the combined oral contraceptive pills, the substance which
\nacts as estrogen is EE.<\/p>\n
"The CPA works specially to reduce overproduced oil. It works
\nfar below the skin, preventing infection and other skin problems.
\nThe combination of CPA and EE can also minimize menstrual
\nbleeding so as to reduce the risk of anemia and pre-menstrual
\nsyndrome (PMS)," Oktafandhi said.<\/p>\n
The pills can be consumed by single women, and also for aging
\nwomen, to reduce baldness.<\/p>\n
In the United States, single and young women reportedly take
\nthe oral contraceptives merely to get rid of skin problems.<\/p>\n
The result, Oktafandhi said, usually can be seen within one or
\ntwo months.<\/p>\n
"There are some fears about these pills, saying that it can
\nmake women gain weight, facial spots and many other things. With
\nthese combined pills, only 20 percent of patients experience
\nweight gain, and it's only two kilograms maximum. It is also safe
\nfor the metabolism and the liver," he said.<\/p>\n
However, Oktafandhi warned that there are some people who are
\nprone to hormone consumption. Some cases show that the pills
\nworsen migraines and varicose veins, as well and possible liver
\nproblems.<\/p>\n
