Germany to open trade house here<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Germany plans to open a trade house in Jakarta
\nto anticipate Indonesia's increasingly strong economic role in
\nSoutheast Asia, a senior German official says.<\/p>\n
Richard von Weizsacker, a former president of the Federal
\nRepublic of Germany, said in a luncheon meeting with members of
\nthe Ekonid German-Indonesian economic group here yesterday that
\nEuropean countries, and Germany in particular, have now shifted
\ntheir economic orientation from the European-Atlantic region to
\nAsia and the Pacific, with the center in the Association of
\nSoutheast Asian Nations (ASEAN).<\/p>\n
\"Germany...is a great believer in regional cooperation, not as
\na seclusion but rather as a stepping stone towards broader
\ncooperation,\" he told some 300 businessmen and diplomats
\nattending the meeting.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's exports to Germany in 1994 increased by seven
\npercent to US$1.26 billion from 1993, while imports from that
\ncountry increased by 19.3 percent to $2.47 billion.<\/p>\n
Von Weizsacker, whose speech was presented during Ekonid's
\n25th anniversary yesterday, suggested that Indonesia increase its
\npotentials in advanced technology and science because countries
\nsuch as Vietnam and China were likely to become close competitors
\nif Indonesia continued to rely on natural resources as its
\ncompetitive edge.<\/p>\n
He contended that Germany would continue to cooperate with
\nIndonesia on a mutually beneficial basis in the fields of
\ntechnology transfer, scientific and cultural exchange and
\nvocational training.<\/p>\n
At yesterday's meeting, a former chairman of Ekonid, Soedarpo
\nSastrosatomo, was presented yesterday with a certificate and
\ngolden pin for his life-long honorary board membership in the
\ngroup.<\/p>\n
According to the director of Ekonid, F. Kleinsteuber, the
\norganization currently groups 570 members, the majority of which
