        "content": "<p>German President here to boost bilateral ties<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): German President Johannes Rau and his wife<br>\nChristina arrived here on Monday for a five-day visit to<br>\nstrengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>Rau arrived at Halim Perdanakusuma airport at around 3:30 p.m.<br>\nonboard a special flight and was welcomed by President<br>\nAbdurrahman Wahid and several Cabinet ministers.<\/p>\n<p>Rau was scheduled to meet with Vice President Megawati<br>\nSoekarnoputri before attending a state dinner at the Merdeka<br>\nPalace later on Monday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Rau, on Tuesday, is scheduled to hold talks with Abdurrahman,<br>\nchairman of the People&apos;s Consultative Assembly Amien Rais and<br>\nHouse of Representatives Speaker Akbar Tandjung.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Rau will leave for Yogyakarta to visit a local<br>\nIslamic boarding school and Borobudur temple.<\/p>\n<p>He will then fly to the North Sumatran capital, Medan, on<br>\nThursday to meet with church leaders and then go to Nommensen<br>\nUniversity.<\/p>\n<p>Rau is scheduled to leave for Germany on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Karl Carstens was the last German President to visit Indonesia<br>\nin 1984.<\/p>\n<p>Germany is Indonesia&apos;s sixth leading trade partner worldwide<br>\nafter Japan, the U.S., Singapore, the Netherlands and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>At present, about 160 German companies are represented in<br>\nIndonesia in the sectors of mechanical engineering, medical<br>\ntechnology and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The main German imports from Indonesia are clothing,<br>\nagricultural produce and electro-technical products. Germany&apos;s<br>\nmain exports to Indonesia include machinery, electronic and<br>\nchemical products.<\/p>\n<p>Rau became the third foreign top state official to visit<br>\nIndonesia this year after Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari<br>\nVajpayee and Brazilian President Fernando Hendrique Cardoso.<br>\n(byg)<\/p>",
