German Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan is undertaking an
official visit to Indonesia accompanied by a business delegation. The
strategic move aims to strengthen the partnership between the two
countries, particularly in the renewable energy sector and a socially
just energy transition.

In a statement on Tuesday (18/08/2026), Indonesia has now become one
of the new focus countries for German development policy. This is in
line with the reform process of the German Development Ministry (BMZ),
which continues to expand cooperation to encourage private sector
involvement in nine potential partner countries.

Besides Indonesia, the other potential focus countries include Ghana,
Kenya, Morocco, South Africa, Brazil, India, Mexico, and Vietnam. An
Action Plan for Business and Development has been in place since autumn
2025.

“If we intensify our economic cooperation, both sides will benefit:
Indonesia can accelerate its sustainable development, and Germany can
strengthen its own economy,” said Alabali Radovan.

“This contributes to climate protection, creates new jobs in
Indonesia and offers new opportunities for German companies,” she
explained.

The visit offers a golden opportunity for German technology providers
from the renewable energy sector to interact directly with
representatives of Indonesian companies, start-ups, researchers,
students, and government officials. The interaction formats include
conference visits, business matchmaking events, and roadshows with
various innovative start-ups.

Together with Indonesia’s Minister of National Development Planning
(Bappenas), Alabali Radovan opened the Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week
(ISEW), a renewable energy conference organised by the Indonesian
government with full German support. The German business delegation is
also scheduled to visit the operational sites of their companies in
Indonesia, such as Bayer and Siemens.

In addition to Bappenas, Alabali Radovan will also hold a series of
strategic talks with the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs and
the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM). The active
involvement of German companies is already visible in tangible form,
including through a pilot project for a solar-powered cold storage
facility.

The project, funded through German development cooperation, uses
technical components directly from Siemens and refrigeration specialist
Bitzer. This private investment is considered highly important for
Indonesia’s energy transition, which also offers significant expansion
opportunities for German and European companies.

Further cooperation is also being pursued through the Just Energy
Transition Partnership (JETP) with Indonesia, to mobilise fresh funds of
around US$20 billion (Rp 356 trillion). Germany acts as co-lead of the
JETP together with Japan, and is actively promoting this partnership on
behalf of the G7 countries, the European Union, Denmark, and Norway.

Under the JETP framework, Germany is committed to supporting
Indonesia in expanding the use of renewable energy and its energy
networks, as well as creating a conducive legislative framework. This
step is crucial to strengthening the resilience of Indonesia’s energy
sector against various global crisis threats, including supply shocks
caused by war in the Persian Gulf.
",
