        "content": "<p>German machine producers look for local distributors<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): German machine manufacturers, currently taking<br>\npart in the five-day trade exhibition at the Jakarta Fairground<br>\nin Kemayoran here, are looking for Indonesian partners to help<br>\nmarket their products.<\/p>\n<p>An economic adviser of the German machinery and plant<br>\nmanufacturers association, Anke Uhlig, said here yesterday that<br>\nthe German companies need Indonesian partners, who would operate<br>\nas their marketing home-base in the Southeast Asian region.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We want to expand our market to emerging countries such as<br>\nmembers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN),&quot;<br>\nUhlig said.<\/p>\n<p>Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore,<br>\nThailand and Vietnam are members of ASEAN.<\/p>\n<p>Uhlig said that Indonesia is one of the strongest emerging<br>\nmarkets in the Asia-Pacific region, which is now dominated by<br>\nJapanese and Korean products.<\/p>\n<p>Lexi Sumampow, the German-Indonesia Economic Association&apos;s<br>\npublic relations manager, said that the German government<br>\nencourages companies to increase exports but not to relocate<br>\ntheir industrial activities abroad because of Germany&apos;s high rate<br>\nof unemployment.<\/p>\n<p>He said the depreciation period of German goods is generally<br>\nlonger than for those made by other countries.<\/p>\n<p>Seventy small and medium-scale German companies are taking<br>\npart in the trade fair called Manufacturing Indonesia &apos;95, which<br>\ncloses tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The high number of German exhibitors demonstrates the ever<br>\nincreasing German interest in the Indonesian economy,&quot; said<br>\nUhlig.<\/p>\n<p>German exports of machinery to Indonesia rose steadily from<br>\nUS$172 million in 1987 to $612 million in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;In the first half of this year, our deliveries to Indonesia<br>\nrose by 45 percent to $409 million from the same period of last<br>\nyear,&quot; she said. &quot;The exports consisted of prime movers, textile<br>\nand woodworking machines, printing and paper machinery.&quot; (kod)<\/p>",
