A group of prominent figures and academics from Gerakan Nurani Bangsa
(Conscience of the Nation Movement) met with PDI Perjuangan chairwoman
Megawati Soekarnoputri in the Menteng area of Central Jakarta on Monday,
22 June 2026. Lukman Hakim Saifuddin, a representative of the movement,
said the meeting discussed current issues. “We talked about community
life and governance,” Lukman said after the meeting. The former Minister
of Religious Affairs declined to provide details of the discussion or
Megawati’s views. “She has experienced the long ups and downs of
politics,” he said.

Lukman claimed the meeting with Megawati had been planned for some
time. He said Gerakan Nurani Bangsa has an agenda to visit national
figures, particularly former presidents and vice presidents. He added
that in 2025, the movement had already met with Susilo Bambang
Yudhoyono, Jusuf Kalla, and Ma’ruf Amin. Megawati did not give a press
statement to the media after the two-hour meeting. She took time for a
photo with several representatives of the movement, including Ignatius
Suharyo Hardjoatmodjo, Franz Magnis-Suseno, Hilmar Farid, and Sinta
Nuriyah, the wife of former president Abdurrahman Wahid. The meeting was
held at the Megawati Institute office.

Another representative who attended, Laode M. Syarif, said one of the
topics discussed with Megawati was the legislative process for the
revision of the Police Law in the House of Representatives. The revision
of the Police Law was passed by the DPR on 9 June 2026. Laode said the
revision was passed almost without adequate public consultation.
According to the former deputy chairman of the Corruption Eradication
Commission, the resulting law does not reflect the voice of the people.
He noted that the DPR and the government did not accommodate
recommendations made by the Police Reform Acceleration Commission. “We
ask the DPR and the government to please pay attention to what the
public is voicing,” Laode said.

The meeting was held amid a national situation facing economic
pressures. President Prabowo is also under pressure from student masses
demanding the cessation of various programmes deemed wasteful of state
finances, such as the free nutritious meals programme (MBG) and the
Koperasi Desa Merah Putih (Red and White Village Cooperatives). Students
also highlighted the revision of the Police Law. Previously, Chairman of
House Commission III Habiburokhman stated that the deliberation of the
Police Law revision had undergone broad public participation. Students
have held demonstrations in various regions. Today, the Indonesian
Islamic Student Movement (PMII) held a protest in front of the DPR
building to demand an evaluation of various Prabowo programmes.
",
