Geothermal power could end blackouts<\/p>\n

The Indonesian Geothermal Association (API) said on Tuesday
\ngeothermal power plants would produce more than 400 Megawatts
\n(MW) in additional electricity power until 2005 to help avoid the
\nimminent power crisis in the country.<\/p>\n
API chairman Herman Darnel Ibrahim said the additional power
\nwould be generated from existing plants and development of new
\npower plants.<\/p>\n
According to Herman, at present, all seven operating
\ngeothermal power plants in the country have produced power about
\n800 MW.<\/p>\n
Herman said that five new geothermal power plants would be
\ndeveloped in Java, Bali, Sumatra and Sulawesi in the future.<\/p>\n
The government is under pressure to develop more power plants
\nto avoid power blackouts particularly in Java and Bali, in 2004.<\/p>\n
But the state-owned electricity company PLN said that the
\npower crisis could be avoided if the Tanjung Jati B power plant
\nin Central Java and the Muara Karang power plant in Jakarta could
\nstart producing power.<\/p>\n
Herman also noted the importance of the development of
\ngeothermal power plants as they are environmental friendly and
\ncould generate revenue for the government.<\/p>\n
\"Geothermal power plant is very environmental friendly as it
\ncan reduce carbon emission.\"<\/p>\n
\"Referring to the Kyoto Protocol, our country can sell the
\ncarbon emission reduction to advanced countries that cannot
\nreduce their carbon emission,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Herman said for example a 330 MW geothermal power plant could
\nsave about 2.6 million tons of carbon emission in a year.<\/p>\n
Therefore, he expected the government to pay more attention to
\nthe development of geothermal power plants.<\/p>",
