Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East involving Iran and the United States and Israel threaten to close the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns over national energy security as the route accounts for about a fifth of global oil and LNG trade. Indonesian lawmakers urged rapid, strategic government action, noting that 20–25% of Indonesia's crude imports pass through Hormuz, and calling for broader diversification beyond the Middle East, including reducing LPG dependence. While authorities say domestic energy supply is secure for now, experts recommend long-term structural measures, stronger supply security for Pertamina, and an acceleration of domestic oil and gas production and renewable energy transition.

The escalation of geopolitical tensions between Iran and the United
States and Israel, with the threat of closure of the Strait of Hormuz,
has drawn serious attention to national energy stability. The route
carries around 20% of global oil and LNG trade, and disruptions in the
region could trigger a surge in global oil prices and heighten pressure
on importing countries, including Indonesia.

Firnando Ganinduto, a member of Commission VI of the Indonesian House
of Representatives, said Indonesia should respond to the situation
quickly and strategically. He referred to a statement by Energy and
Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, who noted that around
20–25% of Indonesia’s crude imports originate from the Middle East and
pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

“This condition makes Indonesia vulnerable to distribution
disruptions and global price fluctuations that could have a direct
impact on the state budget,” he said, as quoted in a press release
received on Wednesday, 4 March.

Nevertheless, Firnando appreciated the government’s step to shift
part of crude oil imports from the Middle East to the United States as
part of a supply diversification strategy.

According to him, the policy is important to maintain energy supply
certainty amid geopolitical uncertainty. He also highlighted that around
30% of Indonesia’s LPG imports still depend on the Middle East, so
alternatives from other regions should be sought urgently.

Although the government says domestic energy supply is secure for
several weeks, Firnando believes that short-term mitigation must be
accompanied by long-term structural measures. He urged Pertamina to
strengthen supply security strategies and to broaden a more diverse
energy trading network to reduce dependence on a single region.

On the other hand, he stressed that this situation should be a
momentum to accelerate the strengthening of domestic oil and gas
production and to push the transition to new and renewable energy.
“Import diversification is only a tactical solution, while national
energy autonomy and resilience are long-term strategies that will
determine Indonesia’s economic stability going forward,” he said.

IRAN states that the armed conflict currently underway with the
United States and Israel will only end if the opposing parties halt
their aggression.

The escalation of the war between the United States, Israel, and Iran
has begun to impact the US economy.

Asia-Pacific stock indices fell amid the escalation of the US–Israel
war with Iran. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz raises concerns about
a global energy crisis.

Tensions in the Middle East reached a new boiling point at the start
of 2026.

Diplomatic relations between Madrid and Washington reached a low
point in March 2026.

Member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives,
Amelia Anggraini, reminded the government that a US–Israel attack on
Iran triggers escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.

Indonesia’s Stock Exchange (BEI) said the decline in the Composite
Stock Price Index (IHSG) today was triggered by rising geopolitical
tensions in the Middle East, not domestic sentiment.

Indonesia should be grateful for the noble heritage of the founders
of the nation in the form of the philosophy and ideology of Pancasila
and the Free and Active foreign policy in facing geopolitical
dynamics.

The IHSG on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) opened lower on
Wednesday 4 March 2026, and the escalation of the conflict in the Middle
East involving Iran and the United States is broadening and affecting
several Gulf states.
",
