Geologist's autopsy report completed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): An autopsy report confirming the suicide of
\nFilipino Bre-X geologist Michael de Guzman will be given to the
\nPhilippines government soon, police said.<\/p>\n
Head of National Police Detective Department, Brig. Gen.
\nRusdihardjo said Tuesday that the police had completed autopsy
\ntests that confirmed the former chief geologist of the Canadian
\nBre-X mining firm committed suicide on March 19.<\/p>\n
But the report was not final, Rusdihardjo said.<\/p>\n
\"We are open to any new possibilities,\" he told The Jakarta
\nPost.<\/p>\n
\"The report will be given to Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign
\nAffairs in Jakarta and they will deliver it to the Philippines
\ngovernment,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"The autopsy report concluded that de Guzman died because of
\nthe injuries he had falling out of the helicopter,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said police would continue to investigate other possible
\ncauses of death. De Guzman's medical records are still being
\nstudied.<\/p>\n
A body, believed to be that of de Guzman, 41, was found in
\nMuarakaman, East Kalimantan, on March 23.<\/p>\n
On March 19 a helicopter pilot flying him from Samarinda to
\nthe Busang gold site found the back seat empty.<\/p>\n
De Guzman had helped find the Busang gold. Bre-X claimed there
\nwere up to 200 million ounces of gold there, worth around US$77
\nbillion, but this claim soon became controversial.<\/p>\n
The finding of an alleged suicide note to his wife, raised
\nspeculations of suicide. The note said he was suffering from
\nacute hepatitis B.<\/p>\n
Earlier reports said de Guzman's family found it hard to
\nbelieve he had killed himself. They said the results of a medical
\nexamination in February showed he was not seriously ill.<\/p>\n
Filipino experts performed a second autopsy, at de Guzman's
\nfamily's request, to verify the incurable disease suggested by
\nhis alleged suicide notes.<\/p>\n
On April 18 a fingerprint expert at Manila's national Bureau
\nof Investigation, Bayani Palad, said tests to determine whether
\nthe body was de Guzman's were difficult because the body had
\nbegun to decay. He said his findings would have to be approved by
\n13 other bureau experts.<\/p>\n
A forensic expert at the bureau said after initial tests that
\nhe was convinced the person fell to his death.<\/p>\n
Rusdihardjo said there was no cooperation with the Philippines
\nin the investigation.<\/p>\n
\"We investigated without involving other parties because the
\naccident occurred within Indonesian's jurisdiction, and because
\nthe police and experts we have are competent,\" he said. (cst)<\/p>",
