        "content": "<p>Jakarta (ANTARA) - Dr Eka Widya Khorinal, a consultant\nhaematologist-oncologist at Dharmais Cancer Hospital, stated that\ngenetic characteristics have become a vital component in determining\ncancer therapy as medical approaches shift towards more personalised and\ntargeted treatments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past, cancer treatment approaches largely used a\none-size-fits-all concept for all patients. However, we now understand\nthat even within the same type of cancer, the characteristics can\ndiffer, meaning therapy must be adjusted accordingly,\u201d said Eka during a\npress conference regarding breast and lung cancer management in Jakarta\non Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>According to Eka, patients with the same cancer diagnosis do not\nalways show similar responses to treatment because every cancer\npossesses unique biological and molecular characteristics. He explained\nthat conventional cancer treatments can produce diverse responses; while\nsome patients achieve excellent results, others may experience minimal\nimprovement or no response at all to the administered treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, scientific advancements are driving the development of\nmore personalised therapeutic approaches through the understanding of\nthe molecular and genetic characteristics of cancer in each patient. Eka\nnoted that one factor increasingly prioritised in oncological practice\nis the molecular profile of the cancer, which provides insight into\ndisease behaviour and assists doctors in determining more accurate\ntherapeutic strategies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese genetic characteristics are a crucial component in cancer\ntreatment decision-making. By understanding these traits, doctors can\nselect therapies that are more appropriate for the patient\u2019s specific\ncondition,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Eka emphasised that the need for more precise approaches is becoming\nincreasingly critical as the cancer burden in Indonesia continues to\nrise annually. Based on Globocan 2022 data, Indonesia records over\n400,000 new cancer cases each year, with breast and lung cancers being\nthe two most prevalent types in the country.<\/p>\n<p>To support personalised medicine, doctors are now utilising molecular\ntesting through Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology, which\nenables the identification of various genetic alterations within cancer\ncells. Through these examinations, doctors can obtain detailed\ninformation regarding biomarkers and molecular characteristics, helping\nto determine more targeted therapeutic options.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to advancements in diagnostic methods, Eka stated that\nprogress in cancer therapy is also accelerating with the emergence of\nvarious targeted treatments designed to act on specific molecular\ncharacteristics.
