General's lawyers to visit prosecutors<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A team of lawyers representing Indonesian
\nMilitary (TNI) generals allegedly involved in last year's
\nviolence in East Timor is to visit the Attorney General's Office
\non Tuesday to clarify the planned questioning of its clients.<\/p>\n
\"We will meet with the Deputy Attorney General for General
\nCrimes (A. Rahman) at 2 p.m. tomorrow to clarify the planned
\nquestioning of our clients,\" the team's spokesman, Yan Juanda
\nSaputra, told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Yan admitted that the official summons for the questioning had
\nyet to be received but said the questioning was scheduled to
\nstart next week.<\/p>\n
The government-sanctioned Commission of Inquiry into Human
\nRights Violations (KPP HAM) in East Timor has recommended the
\nAttorney General's Office launch an investigation into 33
\nmilitary and civilian officials, including former TNI chief Gen.
\nWiranto, for their alleged involvement in the violence that
\nerupted after the Aug. 30 self-determination ballot.<\/p>\n
Wiranto, who has been suspended by President Abdurrahman Wahid
\nfrom his Cabinet post as coordinating minister for political
\naffairs and security pending the investigation, has denied any
\nwrongdoing.<\/p>\n
The Attorney General's Office said last week, without giving
\nany time frame, that it would form a team of investigators to
\nprobe the violence and that the team would then name suspects to
\nbe questioned.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Foundation of the Indonesian Legal Aid
\nInstitute (YLBHI) called on Monday for the immediate
\nestablishment of an ad hoc tribunal on the East Timor violence to
\nprovide legal infrastructure for the investigation.<\/p>\n
\"It is still not clear what kind of tribunal there is going to
\nbe to try the suspects in the East Timor violence, so the
\ngovernment and the House of Representatives must immediately
\ndecide on the matter,\" YLBHI's deputy director Dadang Trisasongko
\nsaid in a statement.<\/p>\n
Rights activists have said that the alleged human rights
\nviolations in East Timor last year should not be considered
\nordinary crimes.<\/p>\n
Therefore, the trial of those who were allegedly involved in
\nthe violence should not be held in an ordinary criminal court,
\nthe activists said.<\/p>\n
The bill on the human rights tribunal, which was scheduled to
\nbe submitted to the House later this week, stipulates that the
\nestablishment of an ad hoc tribunal should be based on a
\npresidential decree with the approval of the House. (byg)<\/p>",
