General Hotel plans expansion in Indonesia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): General Hotel Management, a Singapore-based
\nhotel and resort management firm, plans to expand its business in
\nIndonesia to a total of 10 hotels by 1997.<\/p>\n
Company executive Mark A. Edleson said here yesterday that
\nGeneral Hotel Management currently runs two hotels and one
\nexecutive club in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"General Hotel Management currently operates Chedi Hotel in
\nBandung, West Java, and Serai Hotel in Karangasem, Bali. The only
\nclub we currently manage is the Financial Club in Jakarta,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Edleson added that General Hotel Management will manage two
\nadditional hotels next year -- Chedi Hotel in Ubud and Legian
\nHotel -- both in Bali.<\/p>\n
General Hotel Management, established in 1992, also manages
\nthe Datai hotel in Langkawi, Malaysia, and the Chedi hotel in
\nPhuket, Thailand. The company uses Chedi for four-star hotels and
\nSerai for three-star hotels.<\/p>\n
Edleson said the other hotels in Indonesia to be managed by
\nGeneral Hotel Management will be located in Sulawesi and other
\nareas in the country's eastern region.<\/p>\n
He said that the hotels in Indonesia to be managed by General
\nHotel Management are partly owned by PT NusaPacific Island
\nDevelopment, a joint venture company owned by Nusa Pacific
\nInternational of Singapore and Indonesian businessmen. Nusa
\nPacific International itself is jointly owned by Singaporean and
\nIndonesian parties.<\/p>\n
\"NusaPacific owns 53 percent and 40 percent respectively of
\nthe Chedi Bandung and Serai Hotel. The company also owns 80
\npercent of the Chedi Ubud,\" Edleson said.<\/p>\n
He added that the planned five-star Legian Hotel is controlled
\nby businessman Robby Djohan.<\/p>\n
In addition to General Hotel Management, there are three other
\nSingapore-based hotel chains which plan expansion in Indonesia:
\nPacific Hotels International, Aquila International Hotels and
\nResorts and Sedona Hotels International.<\/p>\n
Sedona, affiliated with Straits Steamship Land, plans to
\noperate a number of other hotels throughout the country within
\nthe next few years. It already runs two hotels in Indonesia, one
\nin Padang, West Sumatra, and one on the island of Batam in Riau.<\/p>\n
Aquila, whose majority stakes are owned by Indonesian
\nbusinessmen, plans to manage more hotels in addition to its two
\nhotels in Yogyakarta and Jakarta, while Pacific Hotels
\nInternational, which runs the Purajaya Beach Resort in Batam,
\nwill also expand to Medan, North Sumatra. (icn)<\/p>",
