Gen. (ret) Surono launches biography<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The chairman of the 1945 Generation National
\nCouncil, Gen. (ret) Surono, celebrated his 75th birthday Saturday
\nwith the launching of his biography.<\/p>\n
Addressing an audience, most of whom were former military
\ncolleagues and younger active generals, Surono said the book was
\nmeant to present the younger generation with heroic values and
\nthe spirit of the 1945 generation.<\/p>\n
Coordinating Minister for Political Affairs and Security
\nSoesilo Soedarman described Surono as one of the country's best
\nknown figures, known for his heroic examples.<\/p>\n
\"Surono is such a low-profile person, simple and always
\nprecise in performing his duties,\" Soesilo said at the book
\nlaunching.<\/p>\n
The book titled Surono: Freedom Fighter, Teacher, Athlete and
\nCultural Observer tells of Surono's military career, from a young
\nsoldier to his retirement from military service.<\/p>\n
Born in Banyumas, Central Java, Surono married Suwarti and had
\nfive children.<\/p>\n
He started his military career at his hometown in 1943 as a
\nyoung soldier for the Japanese-created Peta (Defender of the
\nCountry) military group.<\/p>\n
One of his military highlights was his assignment as Armed
\nForces deputy chief in 1974. He held the post until 1978 when he
\nwas appointed coordinating minister for people's welfare.<\/p>\n
From 1983 to 1988 Surono was coordinating minister for
\npolitical affairs and security.<\/p>\n
The biography was written by Solichin Salam, who has also
\nauthored the biographies of first president Sukarno, first vice
\npresident Mohammad Hatta, former prime minister Sjahrir, Gen.
\nSoedirman, former vice president Adam Malik, State Minister of
\nResearch and Technology B.J. Habibie and Soesilo Soedarman.<\/p>\n
Present at Saturday's ceremony were chairman of the Supreme
\nAdvisory Council Sudomo, former chief of the Army's Strategic and
\nReserves Command Let. Gen. (ret) Achmad Kemal Idris, former
\nJakarta governors R. Soeprapto and Wiyogo Atmodarminto, former
\nArmed Forces chief of sociopolitical affairs Lt. Gen. Syarwan
\nHamid and Secretary of Development Operations Lt. Gen. A.M.
