Gema Ikasakti foundation launched<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A group of Trisakti University alumni yesterday
\nlaunched a foundation to provide scholarships to university
\nstudents financially suffering from the economic crisis.<\/p>\n
The foundation, Yayasan Gema Ikasakti, hopes to collect
\ndonations from as many as 45,000 of the private university's
\nalumni.<\/p>\n
\"This idea came up after the economic crisis started (in July
\nof last year). But it (the inauguration) was temporarily delayed
\nby the May 12 incident,\" foundation chairman Bambang Parikesit
\nMoe'min told reporters.<\/p>\n
The foundation is currently compiling data on students who are
\nexperiencing difficulties financing their education because of
\nthe country's economic turmoil.<\/p>\n
\"We'll give priority to Trisakti students, but in the long
\nrun, we'll possibly be able to provide scholarships to students
\nfrom other universities as well,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Four Trisakti students were shot dead on May 12 while
\nparticipating in an antigovernment rally in and around their
\ncampus on Jl. Kyai Tapa, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Bambang also urged the government yesterday to provide
\nopportunities for students to become members of the People's
\nConsultative Assembly (MPR).<\/p>\n
\"Students have pure and clean thoughts. It's in line with the
\nreform spirit,\" he said. (jun)<\/p>",
