        "content": "<p>Garuda to operate Abacus next month<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Garuda Indonesia, the national air carrier, will<br>\noperate the Abacus Mega Computerized Reservation System next<br>\nmonth after acquiring a two percent stake of the Singapore-based<br>\nbusiness early last year.<\/p>\n<p>Sunarjo, an executive of Garuda's subsidiary which will run<br>\nthe business, said yesterday that the application of the system<br>\nis expected to boost the industry of aviation and tourism in the<br>\ncountry.<\/p>\n<p>Sunarjo said, \"We are holding trial operations, starting late<br>\nDecember until later this month, at five of Garuda's ticketing<br>\noffices. Operations will officially start in February,\" the<br>\nAntara news agency reported.<\/p>\n<p>He also said that Garuda will set up a new company for the<br>\nbusiness, which has been approved by the Investment Coordinating<br>\nBoard and President Soeharto.<\/p>\n<p>He refused to reveal the name of the new company, which will<br>\nbe regarded as a foreign investment company with a basis capital<br>\nof US$5 million.<\/p>\n<p>The planned company will tackle the marketing of Abacus'<br>\ntravel packages, including information on airlines, hotels, car<br>\nrentals and travel agents.<\/p>\n<p>Garuda's commercial director, Kussuyono, said recently that<br>\nthe planned subsidiary will likely be named the National<br>\nMarketing Company and that it will help Garuda offer air travel<br>\nand service packages, which have so far been managed by the<br>\nairline.<\/p>\n<p>Sunarjo said that many foreign airlines actually have<br>\nsubscribed the Abacus service.<\/p>\n<p>\"Domestic airlines are still reluctant to subscribe,\" he said,<br>\nadding that the fee is $2 to $3 per route.<\/p>\n<p>Abacus Mega's business covers hundreds of hotels throughout<br>\nthe world and dozens of airlines. A number of leading airlines,<br>\nincluding All Nippon Airways, Singapore Airlines, EVA Air, Silk<br>\nAir, Philippines Air and Cathay Pacific, participate in the<br>\nownership of the system.
