Garuda still using baggage firm despite press barrage<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Garuda Airlines is unlikely to terminate its
\ncontract with the company entrusted with baggage handling at the
\nSoekarno-Hatta International Airport despite allegations
\nemployees have been rifling passenger's bags.<\/p>\n
The company, PT Jakadara, is the sole firm entrusted with
\nmoving baggage from planes' storage sections to the luggage
\nretrieval belts at the airport.<\/p>\n
A top Garuda Airlines official, who asked not to be named,
\ntold The Jakarta Post Tuesday that the company was concerned at
\nthe newspaper reports on the involvement of PT Jakadara employees
\nin the theft.<\/p>\n
However, the official said that the airline will not revoke
\nits contract with the service firm in the near future.<\/p>\n
\"There are some provisions in the contract forbidding us to
\nunilaterally terminate it,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The official would not give details of those provisions.<\/p>\n
Garuda Airlines, along with other airlines, have employed PT
\nJakadara to handle their clients' cargo and the aircraft cleaning
\nat the airport for years.<\/p>\n
The official said thus far the airline company has not
\nreceived complaints of theft from passengers.<\/p>\n
\"True, we often receive reports on missing baggage. But, in
\nfact, it is not stolen but misplaced instead,\" the official said.<\/p>\n
PT Jakadara's management is refusing to comment on the
\nallegations of theft.<\/p>\n
Neneng, a secretary for the company, said, \"All directors are
\noutside the office.\"<\/p>\n
Police announced on Monday that they had arrested six
\nemployees of PT Jakadara for alleged baggage theft at the
\nairport.<\/p>\n
The suspects<\/p>\n
The suspects were identified as Ramli, 29, a resident of Duri
\nKosambi, West Jakarta; Waludin, 28, a resident of Jatinegara,
\nEast Jakarta; Sudjimin, 27, a resident of Cilandak, South
\nJakarta; Deden Jaelani, 21, a resident of Pengadegan, South
\nJakarta; Firdaus, 25, and Eddy Mulyadi, 20. The addresses of the
\nlatter were not disclosed.<\/p>\n
Aside from the six, the police have also arrested the two
\nfences who allegedly bought the stolen goods. The fences were
\nidentified as Tjong Po Sie, alias David, 34, a resident of Jl.
\nRaya Kedoya, West Jakarta, and Ricky Viktor Liem, 25, a resident
\nof Taman Dutamas, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Police investigated the thefts after receiving reports from
\nMerpati airlines, which also hires the baggage handling firm.
\nMerpati complained that two of its customers, Mrs. Siregar and
\nMrs. Sahra, had the contents of their baggage, including jewelry,
\nstolen at the airport in the middle of July.<\/p>\n
The thefts occurred between the unloading process and the
\ntransferring of the baggage via vehicles to the baggage retrieval
