Garuda receives first MD-11ER jet<\/p>\n

President of the national air carrier Garuda Indonesia,
\nSoepandi (in suit), prepares to bless the airlines' first MD-11ER
\naircraft assembled by McDonnell Douglas. The jet arrived Saturday
\nat Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.<\/p>\n
Garuda has ordered three MD-11ERs and selected General
\nElectric engines to power the jets. The jets will replace aging
\nMD-11 aircraft currently operated by Garuda.<\/p>\n
The delivery of the first MD-11ER was a year ahead of its
\noriginal schedule. The other two MD-11ERs will be delivered in
\nthe first and second quarter in 1997.<\/p>\n
Garuda, which also received a new Airbus A-330-300 last
\nThursday, will operate the MD-11ER jet on flights to Europe and
\nthe United States.<\/p>\n
The new MD-11ER jet, which left Los Angeles Thursday, was
\npiloted by Roy Megantoro. The airplane flew to Jakarta via
\nHonolulu within 18 hours. It has a cruising speed of 7,200
\nnautical miles. The jet has 12 first class seats, 53 business
\nclass seats and 235 economy class seats.<\/p>\n
The MD-11ER series has a larger loading capability and
\ngenerates less operating costs in comparison to its predecessor,
\nthe MD-11.<\/p>\n
Soepandi said the new jets, part of Garuda's fleet
\nreplacement, are expected to enhance Garuda's performance. (icn)<\/p>",
