Garten to visit Asia<\/p>\n
MANILA (AFP): A top U.S. official will visit the Philippines,
\nMalaysia and Singapore on a tour aimed at exploring potential
\napplications of Washington's \"Big Emerging Markets (BEM)
\nstrategy,\" the U.S. embassy said yesterday.<\/p>\n
U.S. Commerce Undersecretary Jeffrey Garten was due arrive
\nhere at the weekend and will meet with officials on Monday and
\nTuesday before leaving for the two other members of the
\nAssociation of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).<\/p>\n
The BEM strategy involves furthering commercial and trade
\nlinks with several nations that the United States has identified
\nas showing potential for swift market growth in the next few
\nyears.<\/p>\n
ASEAN, which groups Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore,
\nthe Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, are among the countries
\ntargeted under U.S. President Bill Clinton's BEM strategy.<\/p>\n
Other nations under the BEM are Argentina, Brazil, India,
\nMexico, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey and the so-
\ncalled Chinese Economic Area, covering China, Hong Kong and
\nTaiwan.<\/p>",
