Garment workers stage protest<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Workers of garment manufacturer PT Tongkyung
\nMakmur Abadi in Cilincing, North Jakarta, campaigned yesterday
\nagainst their firm's decision to ban them from setting up a
\nbranch of the Indonesian Prosperous Labor Union (SBSI).<\/p>\n
Thirty of their representatives lodged a protest with the
\nNational Commission on Human Rights.<\/p>\n
\"The company management forbids us from establishing the union
\nand even distributes brochures stating that SBSI leader Muchtar
\nPakpahan is a communist. We are insulted,\" Irma, the workers'
\nspokeswoman said.<\/p>\n
The workers were also complaining that the company, whose
\nproducts are exported to the United States, South Korea and
\nEurope, had threatened to fire 35 employees if they did not go to
\nwork for five consecutive days starting from July 16, she said.<\/p>\n
She said the 35 workers were accused of masterminding a
\ndemonstration at the company on June 16 when about 1,300 workers
\ndemanded that the company allow them to set up the union and
\nincrease wages and allowances.<\/p>\n
Commission member Clementino dos Reis Amaral said that the
\ncommission would telephone the company and send it a letter to
\ncheck up on the matter.<\/p>\n
The company's executives could not be reached for comment
