Joedono urged<br>\nyesterday garment manufacturers to promote domestic brand names,<br>\nparticularly at department stores which are now dominated by<br>\nsales of products with foreign names.<\/p>\n<p>\"Garment manufacturers should cooperate with local designers<br>\nand boutiques to promote Indonesian original brand names,\"<br>\nJoedono told members of the Association of Indonesian Garment<br>\nSuppliers.<\/p>\n<p>He also asked department stores, which currently prefer to<br>\nsell garments locally made with foreign licenses, to promote<br>\nproducts with domestic brands.<\/p>\n<p>Poppy Dharsono, head of the small industry department in the<br>\nIndonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), acknowledged<br>\nthat department stores preferred to sell garments with imported<br>\nbrands, rather than those with domestic names.<\/p>\n<p>\"The government should force department stores to provide<br>\ngarments with local brand names at their outlets, to support the<br>\ngrowth of small industries,\" Poppy said. Poppy was elected<br>\nyesterday as the new chairperson of the association, replacing<br>\nSjafioen.<\/p>\n<p>A Kadin executive said that there are about 106 garment brand<br>\nnames circulating in department stores, out of which 40 are<br>\nimported.<\/p>\n<p>\"The imported brand names are, in their number, a minority but<br>\nthey dominate the sales,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, Joedono said, garment producers, are, challenged to<br>\nimprove their image and promote Indonesian brand names in the<br>\ncountry and abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Sjafioen, the association's outgoing chairman, told the<br>\nmeeting that the association should ask retailers to avoid price<br>\nwars through discounting in a bid to achieve fair competition.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday's meeting concluded to change the name of the<br>\norganization to the Association of Indonesian Garment and<br>\nAccessory Suppliers.
