        "content": "<p>Indonesia is facing an increasingly serious waste crisis, with the\nmajority of waste not being properly managed. The waste management\nsystem is deemed to have failed because only a small portion of waste is\ntruly processed.<\/p>\n<p>Waste4Change CEO Mohammad Bijaksana Junerosano stated that out of a\ntotal generation of around 144,000 tonnes per day, only about 25 percent\nis successfully managed. The remainder, about 75 percent, still ends up\nin final disposal sites using an open system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we talk about 144,000 tonnes of waste per day, that\u2019s abstract.\nBut imagine it\u2019s equivalent to 12 Borobudur Temples every day. That\u2019s\nwhat we produce,\u201d said the man familiarly known as Sano during a media\ngathering for Earth Day in Jakarta on Monday (20\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n<p>He assessed that most people are unaware that the waste they discard\nmerely changes location. \u201cOur waste is transported, but the question is\nwhere to? It turns out 75 percent is still unmanaged,\u201d Sano said.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the majority of waste is still disposed of in\nlandfills using the open dumping system, which has actually been\nprohibited since Law No.\u00a018 of 2008. However, this practice continues\nwidely to this day.<\/p>\n<p>This condition is considered high-risk, including triggering\ndisasters such as landslides at disposal sites. He alluded to the\nincident at Bantargebang landfill and the 2005 Leuwigajah tragedy that\nkilled more than 150 people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re like repeating the same tragedy. This is not normal; it\u2019s a\nlegal violation and very dangerous,\u201d Sano said.<\/p>\n<p>He emphasised the need for firm law enforcement to address waste\ngovernance issues. Without strict sanctions, violations in waste\nmanagement continue to occur and are considered normal.<\/p>",
